About The Position

The Assistant Manager of Perishables supervises and coordinates employee activities and ensures customers’ needs are met. The role supports a friendly, helpful shopping experience and upholds Hy-Vee’s values of honesty, integrity, respect, and care for customers and employees. The position oversees employee training and issues, merchandising and ordering, customer service, store standards, safety, sanitation, accounting procedures, labor scheduling, and departmental profitability. It also assists with general store operations as needed.

Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent experience.
At least one year of retail experience, including performing Assistant Manager duties.
Ability to solve practical problems involving a variety of variables with limited standardization and to interpret instructions.
Ability to perform arithmetic calculations involving fractions, decimals, and percentages.
Ability to interview for basic information, guide people, provide basic direction, and follow technical manuals.
Ability to perform medium physical work, exerting up to 50 pounds occasionally, 20 pounds frequently, and 10 pounds constantly to move objects.
Visual ability, with or without correction, including near and distance vision, depth perception, color vision, and field of vision.
Ability to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, reach, stand, walk, pull, lift, grasp, feel, talk, hear, and perform repetitive motions.
Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a pre-employment drug screen.

Responsibilities

Create a friendly, positive atmosphere through teamwork and provide prompt, courteous, and efficient customer service.
Encourage employees to greet and assist customers, and set a strong example of customer care.
Oversee employee training, address employee issues, coordinate disciplinary procedures, and evaluate performance.
Determine locations for advertising and promotional displays and ensure product quality and quantities meet customer and store needs.
Ensure customer-service standards, employee relations, and departmental profitability goals are met.
Ensure compliance with store accounting procedures and report potential problems.
Oversee building and grounds maintenance, sanitation, and cleanliness in accordance with company and store guidelines.
Use and understand store hardware and software technology.
Assist with forecasting and reviewing labor schedules.
Train employees on safety procedures, maintain a safe work environment, complete accident and injury reports, and assign duties in accordance with work restrictions.
Direct merchandise ordering and assist with shelf replenishment and display construction.
Ensure employees comply with established policies, laws, security, sales, and record-keeping procedures.
Confer with employees to resolve problems affecting job duties, productivity, and compliance with policies and procedures.
Follow company policies and store guidelines, report to work as scheduled, and work the expected hours.
Identify employee motivational needs and provide an appropriate work environment.
Recruit and interview applicants, recommend hiring decisions, and assist with orientation coordination.
Stay current with market trends, competition, products, equipment, and merchandising techniques.
Provide ongoing education to employees on company and store policies, procedures, and job duties.
Recommend merchandise additions, deletions, and shelf allocation.
Pursue retail education and continuing education opportunities.
Assist in all store areas as needed and coordinate with department heads on schedules, labor, purchasing, and merchandising.
Sell merchandise, handle cash registers, and issue merchandise through authorized requisitions or inter-store transfers.
Perform other job-related duties and special projects as required.
