About The Position

The Central Park Conservancy, a private not-for-profit organization, is responsible for the preservation and celebration of Central Park. The Conservancy employs roughly 325 people and has an operating budget of $120 million. The Assistant Manager is responsible for the supervision of the day-to-day operations of the cleaning and maintenance of public bathrooms, visitor centers, and staff areas. This role is part of a leadership team responsible for training, monitoring performance, and building accountability. The Assistant Manager is expected to work across departments and with other staff to collaborate and support parkwide events and operations. The department operates 7 days a week, 365 days of the year.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 6 years of increasingly responsible experience in maintenance work in the field of executive housekeeping, facilities or custodial management including a minimum of 6 years in the management and/or supervision of others; or Education and/or experience equivalent to “1” above. However, all candidates must possess the 6 years of management and supervision of others
  • Valid Driver’s License that must be maintained for duration of employment
  • Possess a fundamental understanding and knowledge of park or campus operations or custodial/facility management using modern practices
  • Ability to provide both oral and written communication that is easily understood and direct in its content
  • Ability to engage in critical thinking skills that allow for prioritizing issues, coordinating multiple projects and problem solve
  • Knowledge of computer equipment and Microsoft Office applications
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays as needed
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs. and perform heavy physical labor on a daily basis in all weather conditions

Responsibilities

  • Onboarding new staff, leading staff trainings in customer service, safety, and cleaning standards and techniques
  • Supervising staff and the organization of work and vehicle schedules to meet daily and weekly workloads and projects for cleaning and maintenance of public restrooms, staff areas, and visitor centers
  • Waste management in all facilities and correct collection of refuse and recycling and transport to appropriate locations by facilities staff
  • Performing regular facility inspections to document conditions and assign maintenance and repair tasks through a computer-based work order system
  • Monitoring productivity, compliance, and status of work assignments and taking appropriate action with staff in a uniform manner to build staff accountability
  • Providing regular feedback to staff using established performance standards to support their professional development within the organization
  • Participating in and leading staff meetings and trainings to share information, review safety procedures, and promote team building among staff and leadership
  • Collaborating with the manager in the hiring, performance reviews and discipline of staff and making recommendations for improvements
  • Performing the duties of manager when they are absent
  • Coordinating with other departments within CPC on responding to emergencies, supporting events, and general Park use
  • Collaborating with other Assistant Managers in Park Maintenance, Technical Services, Landscape Management and other departments within Park Operations to achieve set work plan goals
  • Reporting malfunctioning fixtures, safety hazards, quality of life issues through computer based work order system
  • Interacting with Park patrons in a professional manner and responding to staff needing support with interactions or emergencies
  • Identifying and adapting to changing priorities
  • Performing and utilizing inspections to plan and execute an annual facilities maintenance plan and scheduling accordingly
  • Using computer-based management systems for generating work orders, asset and vehicle management, purchasing, monitoring inventory and expenses, scheduling, and timekeeping
  • Maintaining inventory and ensuring proper care/storage of all tools, carts, equipment, and supplies to support the facility maintenance functions
  • Using computer-based management systems for budget control, scheduling, timekeeping and inspections
  • Responding quickly to emergency situations including but not limited to storms and snow events
  • Removing litter, cleaning facilities, removing snow and performing other related tasks as needed and/or required
