About The Position
The Department of Pathology at the University of Pittsburgh is seeking an academic-track faculty member to serve as Assistant or Associate Professor and Director of the Histocompatibility (HLA) Laboratory. This laboratory is crucial for supporting solid-organ and bone marrow transplant programs across multiple hospitals and an Organ Procurement Organization (OPO). The role involves clinical oversight, patient management consultation, quality assurance, research, and teaching.
Requirements
- M.D. and/or Ph.D. degree
- Board-certified/eligible as an HLA lab director by the American College for Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (ACHI)
- Experience and training in a high-complexity ASHI-certified/eligible clinical laboratory supporting solid organ and bone marrow transplantation
Responsibilities
- Responsible for the clinical oversight of HLA Lab
- Assist the HLA Lab Director in all aspects of patient management, both pre- and post-transplantation for all solid organ and bone marrow transplant recipients
- Review all test protocols and provide technical support
- Participate in the review of quality assurance and quality control protocols and proficiency testing for antibody analysis and tissue typing
- Consult with and advise physicians on test interpretation and provide consultation prior and post any intervention
- Participate in preparation for all laboratory inspections and accreditation visits (ASHI, CAP, New York)
- Participate in educational activities including teaching of Pathology Residents and Clinical Fellows rotating through the HLA Lab
- Engage in academic activities to promote clinical translational research
- Provide educational seminars and training of laboratory staff to assure their competency and efficiency
- Conduct research to develop methodologies, instrumentation, and procedures for medical application, analyzing data and presenting findings
- Rotate with the Lab Director to provide 24/7 on call telemedicine consultation coverage for the various transplant services
