Asset Protection Detective, Newport Centre - Jersey City - Full Time
About The Position
As an Asset Protection Detective at Macy’s, you will help protect company assets, reduce shortage, and support a safe, customer-focused shopping environment. Using surveillance, investigative tools, and strong partnerships with store teams and law enforcement, you will identify and respond to theft, recover merchandise, and help protect customers, colleagues, and the business. This role contributes to loss prevention while maintaining a safe and welcoming store environment through training, observation, investigation, and de-escalation. The position involves surveillance, investigations, documentation, responding to alarms, supporting special assignments, and facilitating first aid when needed. It also requires compliance with company policies and legal standards, including those governing apprehensions, searches, and evidence preservation. Court testimony may be required for criminal and civil cases. Full-time colleagues are typically scheduled to work 30 or more hours per week. Schedules include weekend shifts, and hours depend on business needs and colleague availability.
Requirements
- Ability to observe, identify, and respond to suspicious activity in a retail environment.
- Strong communication skills and ability to partner effectively with customers, colleagues, leaders, and law enforcement.
- Ability to use sound judgment, de-escalation tools, and company procedures to support a safe environment.
- Ability to handle proprietary, sensitive, and confidential information with discretion and integrity.
- Ability to apprehend shoplifters.
- Ability to stand and walk around the store or department for prolonged periods.
- Ability to sustain long periods in enclosed surveillance areas.
- Ability to frequently lift or move up to 30 pounds.
- Close vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus.
- For jobs in New York, a current New York State Security Guard License is required.

Responsibilities
- Use surveillance techniques, investigative tools, and reporting systems to identify theft, dishonest activity, and shortage trends.
- Partner with Asset Protection leaders, store teams, and law enforcement to support investigations and protect company assets.
- Use de-escalation tools and sound judgment to help maintain a safe environment for customers and colleagues.
- Prepare clear and timely reports, statements, evidence, and documentation for incidents, investigations, audits, assigned activities, and legal proceedings.
- Train colleagues on protocols that help protect company assets.
- Identify, investigate, and respond to theft and dishonest activity.
- Support the apprehension of shoplifters and dishonest employees in accordance with company policies and legal requirements.
- Recover stolen merchandise and provide statements, evidence, and documentation to support investigations.
- Maintain compliance with company policies and legal standards related to apprehensions, searches, and evidence preservation.
- Testify in court for criminal and civil cases as needed.
- Respond to alarm calls and support special assignments.
- Facilitate first aid for customers and colleagues when needed.
- Foster acceptance and respect in relationships with colleagues, customers, and communities.
