Coach in various secondary interscholastic athletic programs. The coach is responsible for the sport and team they coach, establishing training procedures, methods, and systems for both senior high and middle school teams. They must never discourage a student from participating in other sports and should design their sport in the interest of a well-rounded total school athletic program. A cooperative attitude among all coaches is essential. The coach instructs athletes in fundamental skills, strategy, and physical training, aiming for individual and team success while fostering moral values, pride, acceptable social behavior, self-discipline, and self-confidence. They must have a thorough knowledge of all athletic policies and the rules and regulations of the National and Kentucky High School Athletic Associations and ensure their implementation. The coach establishes the fundamental philosophy, skills, and techniques to be taught by staff, including middle school staff, and arranges conferences, clinics, and staff meetings. They maintain discipline, adjust grievances, and work to increase morale and cooperation among staff. The coach assists the athletic director in scheduling, transportation, lodging, meals, and preparation for events or practices, adhering to facility times. They provide the athletic director with all necessary documentation for local, state, and national requirements, including physical examinations, insurance forms, records, and eligibility forms. The coach arranges for the issuing, storing, and reconditioning of equipment and helps provide training rules and unique regulations of the sport to each athlete. They attend as many practice sessions and games involving other teams within their sport below the varsity level as possible and must show interest in the feeder program. The coach initiates programs and policies concerning injuries, medical attention, and emergencies, and directs student managers and statisticians. They help athletes with college or advanced educational selection and participate with the athletic director in budget needs formulation. The coach monitors equipment rooms and coaches' offices, authorizing entry, and issuing or requisitioning equipment. They permit athletes only in authorized areas of the building at appropriate times and examine locker rooms before and after practices and games, checking on general cleanliness. The coach assumes responsibility for the general cleanliness of locker rooms in season and for the cleanliness and maintenance of specific sport equipment at all times. They secure all doors, lights, and windows and lock up before leaving the building if custodians are not on duty. The coach instills in each player respect for equipment and school property, its care, and proper use. They promote the sport within the school by recruiting athletes not in other programs and promote sports outside the school through news media, little league programs, or other feasible means. The coach works with the athletic director on special promotional activities and maintains good public relations with news media, booster clubs, parents, officials, volunteers, and fans. They keep the athletic director informed of any serious injuries to athletes and maintain and are responsible for team records, individual sports, letterman, and award winners, providing this information to the athletic director and news media. The coach stays updated on new developments in their sport by attending clinics and state playoffs. They work with the principal, athletic director, and cheerleaders on sports assemblies and pep rallies. The coach arrives early enough before practice, contests, and meetings to prepare adequately and remains long enough afterwards to help players with problems or participate in staff discussions. They perform other duties as directed by the principal, athletic director, and/or superintendent of schools.
