About The Position

The Middle School Basketball Coach is responsible for providing leadership, instruction, supervision, and positive mentorship to student-athletes while promoting athletic development, academic achievement, teamwork, discipline, sportsmanship, and character. The coach will plan and conduct practices, instruct student-athletes in basketball fundamentals and game strategies, supervise students during practices and competitions, and provide a safe, positive, and supportive environment. The coach must have knowledge of and comply with all applicable Illinois Elementary School Association (IESA) rules, regulations, policies, and procedures, including any changes or updates governing middle school basketball competitions. The coach is expected to conduct themselves in a professional manner at all times and serve as a positive role model for students. The coach must demonstrate sound judgment, effective communication, dependability, teamwork, and a commitment to student success. The coach will hold student-athletes accountable for appropriate behavior, good sportsmanship, attendance, effort, and adherence to team and school expectations. The coach will also encourage student-athletes to maintain academic success and demonstrate appropriate behavior in the classroom and throughout the school community. The coach must be willing to work the necessary hours to support the success of the basketball program and complete all required athletic, school, district, and IESA paperwork in a timely manner.

Requirements

  • Experience teaching, coaching, or working with middle school-aged students preferred.
  • Previous basketball coaching or playing experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of basketball fundamentals, rules, strategies, and appropriate coaching techniques.
  • Knowledge of and willingness to comply with IESA rules and regulations.
  • Experience working with diverse student populations, including students from urban communities, preferred.
  • Ability to establish positive relationships with students while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries.
  • Strong communication, organizational, leadership, and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to student-athlete academic and personal success.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with school staff, families, and administration.
  • Ability and willingness to work after-school practices, games, tournaments, and other required activities.
  • Successful completion of all required federal, state, and District background checks and clearances.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and conduct organized, age-appropriate basketball practices.
  • Teach and develop fundamental basketball skills, techniques, strategies, and game knowledge.
  • Supervise student-athletes during practices, games, tournaments, and other team-related activities.
  • Follow all IESA rules, regulations, and eligibility requirements.
  • Promote teamwork, sportsmanship, discipline, respect, and positive behavior.
  • Establish and maintain appropriate team expectations and standards.
  • Monitor student-athlete academic progress and encourage academic achievement.
  • Communicate effectively with student-athletes, parents/guardians, school staff, and administration.
  • Maintain accurate attendance, eligibility, participation, and other required records.
  • Complete all required district and IESA forms and paperwork by established deadlines.
  • Ensure the proper care and security of athletic equipment and facilities.
  • Attend required meetings, trainings, and IESA activities.
  • Report injuries, disciplinary concerns, or other significant student matters to the appropriate school administrator.
  • Follow all District 132 policies, procedures, and expectations.
  • Perform other duties related to the basketball program as assigned.
