About The Position

Requirements

• High school graduate or equivalent.
• Graduate from an accredited program; the listed field of study is an accredited program.
• Detailed knowledge of ultrasound physics, cross-sectional and vascular anatomy, and Doppler techniques sufficient to perform procedures independently to radiologist standards.
• Basic computer skills, including data entry and retrieval and knowledge of Microsoft Office.
• Patient-care and communication skills to work effectively with patients from infant through geriatric ages, including handling sensitive issues calmly and professionally.
• Ability to communicate effectively about procedures and answer patient questions, including questions about visible examinations such as fetal ultrasounds.
• Ability to read, write, and speak conversational English.
• Ability to learn and use radiology software packages and PACS applications and adapt to departmental policies and procedures.
• Ability to perform ultrasound procedures independently and demonstrate appropriate technical skills.
• Ability to recognize differences between healthy and pathological areas, with knowledge of anatomy, physiology, patient care, and medical ethics.
• Ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment, demonstrating flexibility, reliability, sound judgment, and initiative.
• Familiarity with age-specific criteria and competency in applicable areas.
• Strong organizational and interpersonal skills, including the ability to communicate with people of diverse backgrounds and ages.
• At least one required certification pathway: Basic Life Support (BLS) certification, and one of the following: Registered Vascular Specialist (RVS); Registered Technologist – Vascular Sonography RT(VS)(ARRT); Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT); Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer – Abdomen (RDMS-AB); Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer with OB/GYN specialty (RDMS-OBGYN); Registered Musculoskeletal Sonographer (RMSKS); Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer – Pediatric Sonography (RDMS-PS); Registered Technologist – Breast Sonography RT(BS)(ARRT); or Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer – Breast Specialty (RDMS-BR).

• Experience with specialized sonographic procedures such as breast, prostate, or operating-room ultrasound imaging, and expertise in pediatric, neuro, and vascular sonography.

Responsibilities

• Perform high-quality diagnostic ultrasound examinations in accordance with provider orders and departmental protocols.
• Verify patient identity and exam appropriateness, and obtain necessary clinical history before scanning.
• Position patients and equipment, manipulate transducers and technical factors, and acquire optimal images, waveforms, heart rates, and other diagnostic data.
• Explain procedures and educate patients while maintaining their comfort, cooperation, and privacy.
• Complete exams in a timely manner, maintain workflow, and minimize empty table time.
• Operate imaging equipment safely and properly, including scanners, injectors, and monitors, adapting protocols for patients of all ages.
• Maintain accurate and timely documentation in the EMR and PACS, and complete ultrasound technologist worksheets with clear exam findings for radiologist review.
• Collaborate with radiologists and other healthcare providers to ensure appropriate imaging and continuity of patient care.
• Follow infection-control standards and use approved PPE and disinfectants.
• Follow department procedures for patient identification, informed consent, and time-outs before exams.
• Position patients accurately and comfortably, using immobilization devices when necessary.
• Ensure exam rooms are clean, stocked, and ready for use; perform routine equipment cleaning and safety checks; and notify appropriate personnel when inventory is low.
• Acquire and analyze ultrasound images and data, providing complete studies for radiologist interpretation.
• Sterilize transducers as needed.
• Maintain required continuing education and annual education requirements, and keep required registries and licenses current.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
