The National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO), managed by Associated Universities, Inc. (AUI), is a leading research and development organization focused on the study of the universe. NRAO operates advanced radio telescope facilities for international scientists and has been crucial in understanding phenomena like black holes and the early universe. With the rise of non-geostationary orbit (NGSO) satellite systems, there's an increase in radio frequency interference (RFI) affecting astronomical observations. NRAO, with NSF support, is collaborating with NGSO operators to mitigate these impacts through techniques like the Operational Data Sharing (ODS) system. ODS is an automated framework for exchanging telescope observation schedules, allowing NGSO operators to access real-time telescope parameters via a secure API. The NRAO Spectrum Management Department (SMD) is seeking an Assistant Scientist to join the ODS project team. This role involves 75% dedicated work to ODS development and 25% for independent research. The primary focus will be supporting coordinated testing and evaluation of the ODS system across various NRAO sites, other U.S. radio astronomy observatories, and federal agencies. This is a three-year appointment with potential for renewal. The position is preferably based in Charlottesville, Virginia, with potential for telework or remote options for highly qualified candidates. Domestic travel between NRAO sites and conferences is expected.
