About The Position
The Police Lieutenant performs commissioned law enforcement duties to prevent crime and protect life and property while armed and in uniform. The Orleans Levee District Police Department patrols and inspects the levees and floodwalls surrounding Orleans Parish and checks gauges and flood structures to help ensure the integrity of the levee system. The Lieutenant supervises a platoon of police officers, a Sergeant, and a police dispatcher, serving as the platoon's highest-ranking officer. The role includes maintaining radio contact with officers, responding to incidents, overseeing assignments and inspections, coordinating enforcement activities, and ensuring municipal, state, and federal statutes are enforced. The Lieutenant also reports to major incidents, supervises arrests and evidence preservation, coordinates personnel for crowd control, and assigns additional officers during weather-related emergencies. Extended hours may be necessary during emergencies.
Requirements
- Four years of law enforcement experience; up to two years may be substituted with 60 semester hours from an accredited college or university, at a rate of 30 semester hours per year.
- At least 18 years of age.
- Current Louisiana driver's license.
- An active Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certification may be required.

Responsibilities
- Supervise a platoon consisting of a Sergeant, several police officers, and a police dispatcher, and serve as the highest-ranking officer on the platoon.
- Maintain radio contact with officers and respond to incidents as needed.
- Monitor and coordinate leave usage, approve leave when necessary, and guard against leave abuse.
- Monitor the Sergeant to ensure assignments are distributed and police officers are inspected.
- Ensure enforcement of municipal, state, and federal statutes.
- Coordinate law enforcement activities, including supervision of arrests and preservation of evidence.
- Report to major incidents to ensure they are handled correctly and contact outside agencies when necessary.
- Oversee the lakefront in New Orleans and assign personnel for crowd control on Sundays and major holidays.
- Call in additional officers during weather-related emergencies and assign them where needed.
- Remain on duty for extended hours during emergencies when necessary.
