About The Position

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree.
• Completed or in the process of completing a 2-year American Orthoptic Council (AOC) Orthoptic Fellowship Program.
• Certified or eligible for certification by AOC.
• Knowledge of ophthalmic anatomy and physiology and common eye conditions.
• Ability to use and maintain orthoptic and general ophthalmic instruments.
• Teaching skills to assist in training orthoptic/ophthalmic technician students.
• Analytical skills to determine methods of patient evaluation and recommend treatment.
• Interpersonal skills for interacting with pediatric and adult patients and referring ophthalmologists.
• Ability to assess the needs of adult and pediatric patient populations and provide appropriate care.
• Ability to explain the examination process effectively and help ease patients’ concerns and apprehensions.
• High attention to detail.
• Ability to work in a high-volume clinic and fast-paced environment.
• Able to have close contact with patients.
• May need to assist visually impaired patients from wheelchairs into examination chairs.
• Requires prolonged standing, walking, bending, stooping, and stretching.

Responsibilities

• Evaluate patients with ocular motility abnormalities, determine appropriate treatment methods, and report recommendations to referring ophthalmologists.
• Make diagnostic choices during patient evaluations to determine the methods and procedures for continued examination.
• Evaluate patient sensory and motor functions and perform orthoptic duties as directed by the supervising physician.
• Perform strabismus and diplopia evaluations in preparation for strabismus surgery and/or prism glasses with refractions.
• Assist in the treatment of amblyopia.
• Provide evidence-based vision therapy, such as for convergence insufficiency.
• Educate patients and families and provide supportive patient care.
• Prepare and maintain equipment for orthoptic examinations.
• Maintain and dispense Fresnel prism and lens inventory.
• Assist in educating ophthalmology residents and clinical support staff.
• Assist with the development and execution of research projects for the division.
• Help maintain and promote a safe environment and efficient operations.
