About The Position

Requirements

• Meet the minimum education and experience requirements applicable to the Generalist, Social Work, or Dietetics track, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Generalist: Bachelor's degree in a health, human service, or education-related field from an appropriately accredited institution and three years of experience in surveying, clinical work, and/or administration of a program in a related health field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Social Work: Master's degree in social work from an appropriately accredited institution and one year of experience in surveying, clinical work, and/or administration of a program in a related health field; or bachelor's degree in social work from an appropriately accredited institution and three years of such experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Dietetics: Bachelor's degree in nutrition or food service management from an appropriately accredited institution and three years of experience in surveying, clinical work, and/or administration of a program in a related health field, and eligibility for registration from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Successfully complete required training and pass the Federal Surveyor Minimum Qualifications Test (SMQT).
• Ability to sit, stand, and walk for prolonged periods; finger, talk, hear, and smell; lift luggage weighing 20–50 pounds; and maintain close visual acuity.

Nice To Haves

• Experience conducting nursing home regulatory inspections, routine surveys, evaluating compliance with federal and state requirements, and documenting survey findings.
• Experience preparing detailed survey reports, writing statements of deficiency, and accurately documenting complaint-investigation findings.
• Demonstrated communication skills with facility staff, interdisciplinary professionals, and members of the public, including gathering information, conducting interviews, and explaining regulatory expectations.
• Experience managing a home-based inspection workload involving regional travel, scheduling, overnight travel, and inspections across varied shifts, including weekends or nights.
• Clinical assessment or care-planning experience in a regulatory, investigative, or oversight setting, evaluating quality of care and identifying noncompliance in long-term care environments.

Responsibilities

• Conduct routine regulatory inspections of nursing homes to assess compliance with federal and state requirements.
• Investigate complaints involving resident care, safety, and regulatory compliance through on-site assessments and documentation review.
• Complete survey reports, including statements of deficiency and findings from routine surveys and complaint investigations.
• Evaluate facility practices, resident outcomes, and operational processes against regulatory standards.
• Interview residents, staff, and responsible parties to gather information for surveys and complaint investigations.
• Review medical records, staffing information, and facility policies to identify potential compliance issues and confirm observations.
• Coordinate travel and scheduling for on-site inspections across the assigned multi-county region.
• Perform inspections on weekdays, weekends, or night shifts as required.
• Stay overnight when inspecting facilities more than 60 miles from the home base, as needed.
• Complete required training and pass the Federal Surveyor Minimum Qualifications Test (SMQT).
