About The Position

Requirements

• U.S. citizenship.
• Proficiency in written and spoken English.
• Full, active, current, and unrestricted LPN or LVN licensure in a U.S. state, territory, commonwealth, or the District of Columbia.
• Graduation from an approved practical or vocational nursing program, subject to the stated exceptions.
• Meet the experience or education requirements for the grade selected: GS-3 requires no experience beyond the basic requirements; GS-4 requires six months of qualifying experience or graduation from an approved program of at least 24 months, with a stated combined education-and-experience alternative; GS-5 requires one year of qualifying GS-4-level experience and the described nursing knowledge and abilities; GS-6 requires one additional year of qualifying GS-5-level experience and the described technical proficiency and patient-care abilities.
• Complete required background/security investigation, onboarding, and pre-employment identification requirements.
• Participate in the VA seasonal influenza vaccination program.
• Serve a one- or two-year trial period, as determined for the appointment.
• Meet the physical requirements, including moderate lifting and carrying up to 44 pounds, pushing and pulling, reaching, use of fingers and both hands, walking, kneeling, standing, bending, and specified vision, color perception, depth perception, coordination, and hearing abilities.

Responsibilities

• Provide assigned care to variable patient populations based on patients’ conditions.
• Use judgment to select the appropriate order and sequence of procedures and treatments.
• Recognize, report, and record relevant patient information.
• Receive and interpret requests or instructions for procedures from medical or health care personnel.
• Receive assignments for examinations, determine technical factors, and operate equipment and instruments.
• Adjust and adapt specialized equipment for procedures.
• Take, record, and report deviations in vital signs to the provider.
• Collect and label specimens for the laboratory.
• Secure patients’ confidence and cooperation during procedures.
• Provide clerical and administrative support coordination for the unit.
• Coordinate activities in the clinical area to avoid conflicts in patient treatment plans.
• As applicable to grade and assignment, prepare and administer prescribed medications, perform treatments, observe and document patient responses, and report changes in condition.
• Recognize urgent or emergent patient care situations and seek assistance or institute emergency measures as indicated.
• Identify equipment malfunctions, safety hazards, and supply deficiencies and report them to appropriate personnel.
