About The Position

Requirements

• Have completed the junior year of an accredited BSN program before the externship.
• Be currently enrolled in good standing.
• Hold American Heart Association BLS certification.
• Submit two letters of recommendation, including one from a clinical instructor.
• Submit a professional statement of interest.
• Submit a clearly readable unofficial transcript.
• Attend a panel interview if considered as a potential externship candidate.
• Commit to the entire 10-week program and orientation dates and follow the assigned preceptor’s 36–40-hour weekly schedule.

Responsibilities

• Perform direct and indirect patient care under RN supervision.
• Provide physical, psychological, and emotional care and support to patients.
• Apply progressively more complex nursing care knowledge and skills acquired through a formal nursing program.
• Use the nursing process—assessment, planning, intervention, and evaluation—to provide direct patient care in an acute-care setting.
• Manage care for patients with acute and chronic conditions using a holistic approach.
• Integrate critical thinking, care coordination, leadership, collaboration, and communication skills.
• Develop clinical reasoning and competent nursing practice and begin transitioning to professional practice.
• Follow the assigned preceptor’s work schedule and commit to the full program and orientation dates.
