About The Position

The Nurse Extern assists with unit and patient care needs under the direction and supervision of a registered nurse. The extern shadows a nurse preceptor and observes nursing care while practicing in the role of a Certified Nursing Assistant I or II. Externs are expected to work the schedule of their assigned preceptor. The program is described as an eight-week paid program, scheduled May 17 through July 9, 2026. The schedule is full-time, with 12-hour shifts totaling 36 hours per week, rotating shifts, and availability for holidays and weekends.

Requirements

• Be enrolled in an accredited nursing program and entering senior year in fall 2025.
• Hold current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
• Have a current listing as a Nurse Aide I in good standing with the Division of Health Regulation.
• Have Nurse Aide II status before the start of the Nurse Externship Program; the posting states May 19, 2025.
• Possess the full range of body motion needed to pass a basic FIT test, including bending, stooping, standing, and sitting for extended periods.
• Be able to lift and carry up to 30 pounds.
• Submit a 300-word essay with the application describing why you want to be a nurse extern with Iredell Health System, your reasons for entering nursing, and your future career goals.
