Student Nurse Externship - Summer Nursing Externship 2027
About The Position
The nurse externship program is an 8-week paid work experience with a registered nurse preceptor. It is for nursing students entering their senior year of a Bachelor of Science in Nursing program or the third semester of a diploma or associate degree program, graduating in December 2027, Spring 2028, or Summer 2028. The Nurse Extern works under the direction of a Registered Nurse and uses nursing knowledge, techniques, and communication skills to therapeutically meet the needs of assigned patients. The role includes assisting patients with activities of daily living, meals, nourishment, personal hygiene, ambulation, turning, positioning, and transportation. Nurse Externs answer call lights, report observations to the patient's nurse, and document as appropriate. They must follow organizational policies and procedures, protect patient information, and identify and meet each patient's age-specific needs.
Requirements
- Be entering the senior year of a Bachelor of Science in Nursing program or the third semester of a diploma or associate degree program.
- Be graduating in December 2027, Spring 2028, or Summer 2028.
- Have a minimum GPA of 3.0.
- Submit a resume, two letters of recommendation, and copies of transcripts.
Responsibilities
- Work under the direction of a Registered Nurse and with a registered nurse preceptor.
- Provide therapeutic care to assigned patients using appropriate knowledge, techniques, and communication skills.
- Assist with activities of daily living, including serving meals, feeding patients as necessary, and providing fresh water and nourishment between meals.
- Assist patients with personal hygiene and provide hygiene care to patients unable to assist themselves.
- Assist with ambulating, turning, positioning, and transporting patients.
- Answer call lights and report observations to the patient's nurse.
- Document as appropriate.
- Follow organizational policies and procedures and protect patient information.
- Identify each patient's age-specific needs and provide appropriate care.
