About The Position

Science World is a mission-based, charitable organization that supports the development of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art & Design and Math) literacy across British Columbia. Our mission is to ignite wonder and empower dreams through science and nature and our purpose is Science for All. Our Science for All strategy is to revitalize Science World with a substantial capital plan to replace critical infrastructure, enhance the visitor experience and develop new content across all our channels under the themes of Regeneration of the Planet, Human Health, and Inclusion. Our plan is to ensure that people throughout British Columbia, especially under-represented communities, have access to high quality, informal STEAM learning. Through our onsite, online and outreach programs, Science World seeks to spark curiosity and wonder in STEAM and support development of talent across communities in the province. As a facility, Science World is generally open to the public seven days a week, with some extended evening hours in the summer months. Typical office hours are Monday to Friday 8:00am – 5:30pm, with front-facing and operational teams also working a variety of shifts including weekends, holidays and evenings. Hours of work and other related requirements will be scheduled according to business needs and this may include special events on evenings, weekends and holidays. Science World’s On the Road (OTR) touring program is seeking facilitators to deliver engaging science shows, demonstrations and workshops throughout the province of British Columbia. Join this dynamic team supported by a great Public Engagement department under the dome in igniting wonder and empowering dreams in schools and communities. This position requires an enthusiastic, organized, flexible, independent and creative individual with a passion for ‘wowing’ a crowd. Extensive multi-day travel to both small and large communities within BC is required.

Requirements

  • Creative individual with a passion for ‘wowing’ a crowd
  • Previous experience speaking and performing before audiences of varying size and composition
  • Demonstrated dependability, reliability and flexibility and strong problem-solving skills
  • Experience working with children of all ages, specific experience and/or qualifications with early educators an asset
  • Able to work flexible hours including weekends, holidays and evenings
  • Excellent time management and organizational, interpersonal and communication skills
  • An engaged, responsive and respectful team player with demonstrated effectiveness working in a dynamic team environment
  • A minimum of a High School graduation, a post-secondary education is preferred
  • Background in science, interpretation, education, or customer service is preferred, knowledge of BC curriculum is an asset
  • Valid unrestricted BC Driver’s license and a current driver’s abstract are required
  • Must be able to safely lift 15 kg

Nice To Haves

  • Background in science, interpretation, education, or customer service is preferred
  • knowledge of BC curriculum is an asset

Responsibilities

  • Provide students, teachers and adult audiences with a creative, awesome, wow, and memorable, onsite science experience through dynamic science shows, demonstrations, and workshops
  • Option to provide facilitation of various online programs
  • Act as liaison with teachers, school administrators, media and community representatives. Staff must be responsible, energetic, thoughtful, interactive, professional and the positive ‘face’ of Science World
  • Positively influence attitudes towards science and technology
  • Pack, arrange shipping, set-up, maintain, clean-up and return all show and demonstration materials/equipment
  • Drive Science World vehicles or rental vehicles safely to communities and schools as required
  • Travel (via plane, ferry and van) for extended periods of time
  • Participate in media interviews to provide a positive face for the On the Road program in the local community
  • Assist in training volunteers and running special evening and weekend events and workshops
  • Manage trip expenses responsibly - track receipts and prepare detailed and timely expense claims for all tour related expenses (car rental, hotels, meals, shipping, replacement equipment and consumables)
  • Ensure smooth operation of the program through continuous communication and feedback with the Outreach Manager
  • Operate within the philosophy, culture and values of Science World
  • Perform other related duties as required to fulfill any changing business needs of this role
