About The Position
Labcorp is seeking a Histotechnologist to join its team in Knoxville, Tennessee. The role processes human tissue and body-fluid specimens for microscopic examination and performs technical work to produce histopathological slides of surgical specimens. Duties include tissue embedding and sectioning, immunohistochemical testing, routine and special staining, and preparation of stains and reagents. The Histotechnologist operates and maintains manual and automated instruments, performs quality-control and preventive-maintenance procedures, and documents equipment activity and issues. The position follows laboratory procedures for specimen handling, analysis, and reporting, with a focus on accurate, timely results and quality patient care. The schedule is Tuesday through Saturday, 6 p.m. to 2 a.m., with weekends as needed. Flexibility to work overtime or other shifts may be required based on business needs. Employees regularly scheduled to work 20 or more hours per week are eligible for comprehensive benefits.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Histology, or a bachelor’s degree in a chemical or biological science, Histology, Clinical Laboratory Science, or Medical Technology with 11 or more months of histology experience.
- Non-traditional degrees with applicable science credits that meet CLIA standards may satisfy the education requirement.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Proficiency with computers and familiarity with laboratory information systems.
- Strong attention to detail, communication, and organizational skills.
- Ability to handle the physical requirements of the position.
- Ability to pass a standardized color-blindness test.
- Flexibility to work overtime or other shifts depending on business needs.
Nice To Haves
- Three months or more of histology experience.
- Three months or more of immunohistochemistry experience.
- Histology and/or ASCP certifications.
- Comfort embedding both large and small specimens.
- Understanding of laboratory operations, policies, and procedures.
- Experience working in a high-volume laboratory environment.
Responsibilities
- Process human tissue and body-fluid specimens in preparation for microscopic examination.
- Perform technical duties related to producing histopathological slides of surgical specimens.
- Section embedded tissue using a microtome and properly mount sections on microscope slides.
- Perform immunohistochemical tests on formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue sections.
- Process mounted sections using routine and special staining procedures.
- Properly orient and embed surgical tissue specimens.
- Prepare stains and reagents needed for special procedures.
- Report accurate and timely test results to support quality patient care.
- Operate and maintain manual and automated instruments.
- Perform and document equipment maintenance as needed.
- Accurately and promptly record equipment log data.
- Perform and document preventive maintenance and quality-control procedures.
- Adhere to laboratory quality-control policies.
- Follow laboratory procedures for specimen handling and processing, analysis, and reporting.
- Document problems that may affect test performance and perform corrective actions as needed.
