About The Position
The City of Scottsdale Police Department is recruiting for a Forensic Scientist specializing in DNA analysis. This recruitment may be used to fill vacancies at Forensic Scientist I, II, or III levels. Placement depends on the education, experience, and qualifications demonstrated in the application. A Forensic Scientist I learns, through extensive training, to examine, identify, and evaluate physical evidence submitted to the Police Department Crime Laboratory for forensic analysis. Work begins under close technical guidance and review. As training and competency are demonstrated, assignments are performed with increasing independence and responsibility. The employee must successfully complete required training, competency testing, and other requirements before performing independent casework in the assigned discipline. The anticipated starting salary may be up to the midpoint of the applicable hiring range, depending on the candidate’s experience and internal equity. Annual hiring ranges are $70,096.00–$82,388.80 for Forensic Scientist I, $77,313.60–$90,833.60 for Forensic Scientist II, and $88,670.40–$104,748.80 for Forensic Scientist III.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biology, a related physical or natural science, or forensic science, with at least 20 semester hours in chemistry-related subjects from an accredited educational institution.
- For the DNA assignment, additional coursework in population genetics or statistics and an additional 9 credit hours of biology are required.
- For Forensic Scientist II, four years of experience as a forensic examiner in a crime laboratory and working expertise in one forensic discipline are required.
- For Forensic Scientist III, eight years of experience as a forensic examiner in a crime laboratory and working expertise in one forensic discipline are required.
- Possess and maintain a valid, unrestricted driver’s license, with no major citations during the 36 months before the start date. Graduated Driver’s Licenses are considered restricted.
- Reside in Arizona throughout active employment with the City, including when approved to work remotely.
- Complete required training and competency testing before performing independent casework.
Responsibilities
- Examine, identify, and evaluate physical evidence submitted to the Police Department Crime Laboratory for forensic analysis.
- Complete required training, competency testing, and other requirements to qualify for independent casework in the assigned discipline.
