Under the supervision of a Route Supervisor and/or Service Coordinator, the equipment operator is responsible for operating assigned solid waste trucks and equipment, which may include side loader, front loader, roll-off, brush truck, rear loader, knuckle boom, or other necessary trucks. The operator may also be indirectly responsible for supervising up to two other persons as assigned. The role involves operating equipment for automated collection/processing of solid waste, transporting it to transfer stations or landfills for unloading, and performing equipment inspections, cleaning (interior and exterior), and minor repairs. The operator must complete daily task reports, report unsafe conditions, and learn a minimum of three different routes within a specified timeframe. The work environment requires operating equipment year-round in varied weather and traffic conditions, including driving in heavy traffic and narrow alleys or streets. It also involves walking in challenging conditions like mud, snow, heavy dusts, and refuse with potentially hazardous materials. A basic understanding of hydraulic controls on solid waste trucks/equipment is expected.
