About The Position
The Deckhand supports the boat captain and helps ferry Camp Orkila participants to offsite overnight island trips. The role assists with loading and unloading participants and helps ensure the safe handling and operation of the 44-passenger Kwhanice motor vessel and other vessels. This is a full-time, seasonal position at a residential summer camp, and the employee is required to live onsite. The usual camp workweek is six days on and one day off, including training, staff meetings, and regular duties. The position is exempt from minimum wage and overtime regulations under Washington State law. The position works both indoors and outdoors. It requires regular talking or hearing; frequent standing, walking, handling objects, and reaching; a range of visual abilities; and occasional lifting of supplies weighing up to 50 pounds. Work travel is conducted by YMCA-authorized drivers. The YMCA of Greater Seattle describes its commitment to equity, removing systemic barriers, and creating equitable and sustainable environments. Requirements
- Be at least 18 years of age.
- Hold current CPR and First Aid certifications.
- Pass a drug test.
- Be able to participate in rigorous outdoor activities, including hiking, boating, camping, and swimming.
- Relate professionally to parents or caregivers, campers, and staff.
- Have applicable education, training, and experience that provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively; equivalent combinations may be considered.
Nice To Haves
- Current lifeguard certification.
- One or more years of relevant education, training, and/or experience.
- Current Wilderness First Aid or Wilderness First Responder certification.
- Knowledge of and previous experience with diverse populations, including differences in language, culture, race, physical ability, and sexual orientation.
- Ability to speak a language in addition to English.
- Experience with anti-racism practices and coalition building.
Responsibilities
- Assist in maintaining water vessels.
- Supervise campers and ensure their safety at all times.
- Maintain safety equipment, including lifejackets, rescue boats, and first-aid kits.
- Ensure proper maintenance of small craft and larger vessels.
- Ensure passengers understand and follow safe boating practices.
- Assist the Boat Captain with landing, docking, and departing from docks using lines, moorings, and a dinghy with a small outboard motor.
- Operate a rowboat.
- Communicate personal or staff needs promptly to the Boat Captain or Summer Camp Director.
- Attend staff meetings and trainings.
- Support overnight resident camp as needed.
- Maintain relevant American Camping Association standards.
- Follow YMCA policies and procedures, including those concerning medical and disciplinary situations, child-abuse prevention, and emergencies.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
