About The Position

The Assistant Director / Academic Advisor for Political Science reports to the Director of LAS Academic and Advising Services. They are responsible for the academic advising of current and prospective political science major(s) and minor(s). This includes direct advising (in-person and online), the production of advising support materials for students in multiple formats, and the creation of advising protocols for departmental faculty and holding training for faculty. The person in this position must have thorough knowledge of the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences' undergraduate curricula, policies, and procedures and a working knowledge of LAS graduate programs, other university academic offerings, and university policies that pertain to undergraduate students. This individual will liaise among department faculty and the Office for Academic Advising Support.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree required
  • Three years of full-time experience in academic advising or equivalent.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, ability to communicate efficiently and effectively with faculty, staff, and students.
  • Ability to work independently, as well as part of a group when needed.
  • Ability to interpret and apply policies using good and independent judgment.
  • Ability to juggle numerous projects and tasks simultaneously, and to meet deadlines for each.
  • Intermediate to advanced knowledge of MS Office, PeopleSoft, and social media platforms.

Nice To Haves

  • master's degree in a related academic discipline, higher education, student affairs, or counseling preferred.
  • Familiarity with liberal education required.

Responsibilities

  • Advises current and potential political science majors and minors regarding course choices, major selection, progress toward graduation, graduate and professional school options, career opportunities, and tuition/financial implications.
  • Refers students to other university offices when necessary.
  • Leads and coordinates holistic academic advising initiatives in the Department of Political Science.
  • Assigns appropriate faculty advisors to students based on their academic interests; creates and maintains advising support materials and newsletters for students and faculty in multiple print and electronic formats; trains faculty on model advising practices; supports faculty mentoring efforts; makes recommendations to the chair and the Dean's Office regarding course placements, substitutions, and waivers; assists with the coordination of department events for students; represents the department at Admission events and in Career Center initiatives.
  • Attends regular meetings with the LAS Undergraduate College Office staff and the Department of Political Science; provides regular feedback to College Office advising process (new student advising, probation and dismissal, graduation) leaders; assists the Associate Director with accurately accounting for all program requirement changes; assists with degree conferral, newly declared students' record analysis, transfer credit approvals and ensuring the appropriate application of college credit toward the degrees of new, continuing, and graduating students using the Degree Progress Report.
