About The Position

Valiant is seeking skilled CAT III Zaghawa Linguists to provide interpretation and translation services in support of ongoing and new U.S. operations and mission requirements. The role provides foreign-language support, including transcription, translation, and interpretation of non-technical material between English and Zaghawa. It supports military interrogations, intelligence collection, and other operational missions.

The linguist provides cultural and ethnic context for translations, interpretations, and transcriptions, including expert opinions about the likely meaning or intent of statements that may have multiple interpretations. The role also involves document exploitation, scanning, research, and analysis of foreign-language documents and intercepted data for key information; contributing relevant specialized context; identifying and extracting information that meets military information requirements; and providing input to reports. Native proficiency is preferred but not required. Other duties may be assigned.

Requirements

• Must be a U.S. citizen.
• At least two years of interpretation and translation experience.
• Interagency Language Round Table (ILR) level 3 in both the target language and English.
• Document exploitation skills.
• In-depth geopolitical knowledge.
• Computer literacy.
• Ability to understand the essentials of speech in a standard dialect and accurately follow conversations between educated native speakers, radio broadcasts, news stories, oral reports, some oral technical reports, and public addresses on non-technical subjects.
• Ability to produce idiomatic translations of non-technical material with correct syntax and expression between English and the target language.
• Ability to interpret and translate colloquial and slang words and phrases.
• Ability to conduct consecutive and accurate translations, transcription, and interpretation of ongoing conversations, activities, and intelligence activities to and from the target language.
• Ability to accurately provide cultural and ethnic context and advise on the significance of statements, conversations, situations, and documents.
• Ability to accurately exploit documents by scanning, researching, and analyzing foreign-language documents for intelligence information and identifying and extracting information that meets military information requirement list criteria.
• Must have an active Top Secret security clearance, with the ability to obtain SCI.
• Must be able to pass a polygraph and a CI Focus Interview.

Responsibilities

• Provide foreign-language support, including transcription, translation, and interpretation between English and Zaghawa, in support of military interrogations, intelligence collection, and other operational missions.
• Provide cultural and ethnic context and expert opinions on the likely meaning or intent of ambiguous terms, phrases, and statements.
• Scan, research, and analyze foreign-language documents and intercepted data for key information through document exploitation.
• Supplement translations and interpretations with pertinent information related to professional fields such as medicine, science, engineering, and law.
• Identify and extract information components that meet military information requirement list criteria and provide input to reports.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
