About The Position

Valiant Integrated Services is seeking skilled CAT III Afrikaans linguists to provide interpretation and translation services in support of ongoing and new U.S. operations and mission requirements. The role provides foreign-language support, including transcription, translation, and interpretation of non-technical material between English and Afrikaans. It also involves document exploitation and analysis of foreign-language documents and intercepted data for intelligence information. Linguists provide cultural and ethnic context and expert opinions about the likely meaning or intent of statements that may have multiple interpretations, and may supplement translations with information relevant to professional fields such as medicine, science, engineering, and law.

Requirements

• Must be a U.S. citizen.
• At least two years of interpretation and translation experience.
• Interagency Language Round Table (ILR) level 3 in both the target language and English.
• Document exploitation skills.
• In-depth geopolitical knowledge.
• Computer literacy.
• Ability to understand the essentials of speech in a standard dialect and accurately follow conversations between educated native speakers, radio broadcasts, news stories, oral reports, some oral technical reports, and public addresses on non-technical subjects.
• Ability to produce idiomatic translations of non-technical material with correct syntax and expression between English and the target language.
• Ability to interpret and translate colloquial and slang words and phrases.
• Ability to conduct consecutive and accurate translations, transcription, and interpretation of ongoing conversations, activities, and intelligence activities to and from the target language.
• Ability to accurately provide cultural and ethnic context and advise on the cultural and ethnic significance of statements, conversations, situations, and documents.
• Ability to scan, research, and analyze foreign-language documents for intelligence information and identify and extract information that meets military information requirement list criteria.
• Active Top Secret security clearance, with ability to obtain SCI.
• Ability to pass a polygraph and a CI Focus Interview.

• Native proficiency in Afrikaans; preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

• Provide transcription, translation, and interpretation between English and Afrikaans in support of military interrogations, intelligence collection, and other operational missions.
• Provide cultural and ethnic context for translations, interpretations, and transcriptions, including expert opinions about the likely meaning or intent of ambiguous terms, phrases, and statements.
• Scan, research, and analyze foreign-language documents and intercepted data for key intelligence information.
• Supplement interpretations and translations with information pertinent to professional fields such as medicine, science, engineering, and law.
• Identify and extract information components that meet military information requirement list criteria and provide input to reports.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
