About The Position

Valiant Integrated Services is seeking a CAT III Djerma-Songhai (Zarma) Linguist to provide interpretation, translation, transcription, and document-exploitation services in support of U.S. operations and mission requirements. The linguist translates and interprets non-technical material between English and Djerma-Songhai (Zarma), including idiomatic language, colloquial expressions, and slang. Services support military interrogations, intelligence collection, and other operational missions.

The role includes providing cultural and ethnic context and expert opinions on the likely meaning or intent of language with multiple possible interpretations. The linguist scans, researches, and analyzes foreign-language documents and intercepted data for intelligence information, identifies and extracts information relevant to military information requirements, and contributes input to reports. Translations may also need to be supplemented with information relevant to professional fields such as medicine, science, engineering, and law. Native proficiency is preferred but not required. Other duties may be assigned.

Applicants must be U.S. citizens and hold an active Top Secret clearance, with the ability to obtain SCI, and be able to pass a polygraph and CI Focus Interview. Physical requirements may include lifting, using stairs, climbing, and extended sitting or standing.

Requirements

• Must be a U.S. citizen.
• At least two years of interpretation or translation experience.
• Interagency Language Round Table (ILR) level 3 in both the target language and English.
• Document-exploitation skills.
• In-depth geopolitical knowledge.
• Computer literacy.
• Ability to understand the essentials of speech in a standard dialect and accurately follow conversations between educated native speakers, radio broadcasts, news stories, oral reports, some oral technical reports, and public addresses on non-technical subjects.
• Ability to produce idiomatic translations of non-technical material with correct syntax and expression between English and the target language.
• Ability to interpret and translate colloquial and slang words and phrases.
• Ability to provide accurate cultural and ethnic context and advise on the cultural and ethnic significance of statements, conversations, situations, and documents.
• Ability to accurately scan, research, and analyze foreign-language documents for intelligence information and identify and extract information components meeting military information requirement list criteria.
• Must have an active Top Secret security clearance and the ability to obtain SCI.
• Must be able to pass a polygraph and a CI Focus Interview.

• Native proficiency in Djerma-Songhai (Zarma) is preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

• Provide transcription, translation, and interpretation between English and Djerma-Songhai (Zarma) in support of military interrogations, intelligence collection, and other operational missions.
• Provide cultural and ethnic context for translations, interpretations, and transcriptions, including expert opinions on the likely meaning or intent of ambiguous terms, phrases, and statements.
• Scan, research, and analyze foreign-language documents and intercepted data for key intelligence information.
• Supplement interpretations and translations with information pertinent to professional fields such as medicine, science, engineering, and law.
• Identify and extract information components that meet military information requirement list criteria and provide input to reports.
• Perform consecutive and accurate translation, transcription, and interpretation of ongoing conversations, activities, and intelligence activities.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
