About The Position

The Yard Hostler Driver safely and efficiently moves semi-trailers, shipping containers, and straight trucks around a warehouse, distribution center, or rail yard. The role supports smooth operations by positioning trailers at active loading dock doors, staging areas, and parking stalls without driving on public highways. This is a temporary-to-hire, on-site position in Long Beach, California, scheduled Monday through Friday from 6:00 AM to 3:30 PM. Compensation is $29.00 per hour, depending on experience and qualifications. Relocation assistance is not offered.

The role requires prior yard-hostler or related equipment experience, including experience repositioning, driving, and hauling international and/or domestic containers. The employee must have strong maneuvering skills, a clean driving record, and the ability to meet applicable DOT medical standards, including passing a drug and alcohol test. Work takes place outdoors in all weather conditions and includes frequent climbing in and out of the tractor cab and lifting items up to 50 pounds.

Requirements

• Clean driving record and ability to pass an MVR background screening.
• Previous experience as a Yard Hostler/Yard Goat, operating yard equipment, or operating tractor-trailers.
• Experience repositioning, driving, and hauling international and/or domestic containers.
• Exceptional mirror-backing and maneuvering skills in tight, congested, and busy industrial spaces.
• Working knowledge of DOT regulations covering safe driving, hours of service, inspection, maintenance, and vehicle safety control systems.
• Ability to read, write, and perform basic mathematical calculations for receipts, logs, and handheld minicomputers or tablets.
• Comfort working outdoors in all weather conditions and frequently climbing in and out of the tractor cab.
• Ability to safely lift and transport items weighing up to 50 pounds.
• Must meet FMCSA DOT medical standards, including passing a drug and alcohol test.

Nice To Haves

• At least 2 years of experience as a Yard Hostler/Yard Goat or in related yard equipment or tractor-trailer operations is highly preferred.

Responsibilities

• Maneuver 53-foot trailers between parking stalls, staging zones, and active loading docks using specialized terminal tractors.
• Use in-cab hydraulic lifts to raise and lower trailer legs without manually cranking landing gear.
• Verify trailer numbers and log trailer movements using onboard digital systems, inventory tracking tools, or dockyard management systems.
• Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections of yard tractors and trailers.
• Chock trailer wheels, manage dock locks, and report damage or maintenance needs to supervisors.
• Coordinate with warehouse, dock, and logistics staff by two-way radio or phone to position trailers according to loading and unloading schedules.
• Keep the yard clean, organized, and safe.
• Fuel vehicles at assigned fuel stations as needed.
• Complete driver vehicle inspection reports and logs accurately.
