About The Position

The Yard Foreman oversees and directs yard personnel to support good customer service and the safe, efficient movement of goods and equipment on the premises. The role directs material loading, unloading, movement, receiving, and storage, and checks outgoing loads for compliance with shipping specifications, load limits, and safety regulations. The Yard Foreman also trains new employees, assists customers, maintains yard housekeeping, and promotes safe work practices. Work is performed primarily in an outdoor yard environment, subject to variations in temperature and weather, equipment noise, and dust. The position requires frequent lifting and carrying of up to 25 pounds and occasional lifting and carrying of up to 80 pounds. Specific tasks may involve climbing, lifting, pushing, or kneeling.

Requirements

High school diploma or GED and four years of experience performing and coordinating yard or manufacturing activities, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Working knowledge of yard and product activities, including component or material weights and loading methods.
Ability to plan and coordinate work processes to maintain and increase manpower and equipment efficiency.
Advanced knowledge of the operation and handling of machinery and equipment used in the yard; maintain certification to operate equipment when required.
Communication skills sufficient to address teams and work groups about work rules, product standards, and productivity goals.
Ability to read and write work schedules and reports.
Knowledge of basic math, counting, and estimating.
Ability to frequently lift and carry up to 25 pounds and occasionally up to 80 pounds.
Ability to perform tasks that may involve climbing, lifting, pushing, or kneeling.

Responsibilities

Direct workers in loading, unloading, and moving materials on the premises using material-handling equipment and machinery.
Oversee receipt of yard materials and instruct yard workers in receiving and storage procedures.
Inspect outgoing delivery loads for compliance with shipping specifications, load limits, and safety regulations; prepare and reconcile bills of lading and packing slips.
Provide on-the-job training to new yard employees, including instruction on product knowledge, housekeeping, and safety procedures.
Perform the same work as other yard employees.
Keep outside areas neat and clean and ensure scraps and yard debris are recycled or disposed of appropriately; report safety hazards and take remedial action.
Assist customers with loading and load building, provide delivery status and inventory availability information, and answer related questions.
Observe safety procedures and ensure employees do the same to prevent injuries or damage.
Schedule periodic safety meetings and solicit recommendations to improve safety procedures.
Perform other duties as assigned.
