About The Position

GE Aerospace, in partnership with Shield AI, is advancing F110 propulsion system integration for XBAT, a next-generation autonomous aircraft that takes off and lands vertically. The work involves developing an axisymmetric vectoring exhaust nozzle (AVEN) that balances thrust-vector control authority, weight, thermal capability, structural integrity, and manufacturability. Engineering scope includes aerodynamic design, kinematic and mechanical integration, heat transfer analysis, material selection, and validation planning for high-performance unmanned aircraft operation. The XBAT AVEN Mechanical Design Staff Engineer leads the design, procurement, and development of components for the F110 engine’s vectoring exhaust nozzle module as a hardware and/or sub-module owner. The position leads cross-functional mechanical design work, performs advanced engineering analysis, and supports verification and validation. It may report to an engineering manager in Lynn, Massachusetts, or Evendale, Ohio, and involves integration with internal and external engineering disciplines. The role requires access to U.S. export-controlled information, so employment is contingent on proving U.S. Person status. GE Aerospace will not sponsor employment visas for this opening.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline from an accredited university.
  • At least 8 years of experience in mechanical design and analysis, preferably in the energy, aerospace, or industrial sectors.
  • Ability to prove U.S. Person status for access to U.S. export-controlled information.
  • Legally authorized to work in the United States; GE Aerospace will not sponsor employment visas for this opening.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree or Ph.D.
  • Proficiency with CAD software such as NX or equivalent and advanced FEA tools such as Ansys.
  • Strong understanding of material science, manufacturing processes such as machining, casting, and additive manufacturing, and design for manufacturing (DFM).
  • Demonstrated experience conducting complex engineering analyses and interpreting results to guide design decisions.
  • Knowledge of industry standards and regulations relevant to mechanical design and energy systems.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, critical thinking, and attention to detail.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and ability to present technical information effectively.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities

  • Lead cross-functional teams in the mechanical design and development of complex components and subsystems for the XBAT AVEN module.
  • Conduct advanced engineering analyses, including FEA for stress, thermal, vibration, and fatigue, to optimize designs and meet performance and safety requirements.
  • Work with product definition teams to issue component and assembly drawings.
  • Develop and execute design verification and validation plans, including component- and system-level testing, data analysis, and reporting.
  • Collaborate with electrical engineers, materials scientists, manufacturing engineers, and project managers to integrate mechanical designs into larger systems.
  • Prepare and present technical design reviews, documentation, and reports to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Identify and implement design optimization, cost reduction, and manufacturing process improvement opportunities.
  • Keep abreast of industry trends, new technologies, and best practices in mechanical engineering and energy systems.
  • Mentor junior engineers and provide technical guidance on complex design challenges.
