XBAT AVEN Mechanical Design Advanced Lead Engineeer

GE Aerospace•Evendale, OH
•$112,000 - $149,000

About The Position

In partnership with Shield AI on the XBAT program, GE Aerospace is advancing F110 propulsion system integration for next-generation autonomous aircraft, with an emphasis on developing an axisymmetric vectoring exhaust nozzle (AVEN). The work includes nozzle concepts balancing thrust-vector control authority, weight, thermal capability, structural integrity, and manufacturability. The engineering scope includes aerodynamic design, kinematic and mechanical integration, heat-transfer analysis, material selection, and validation planning for high-performance unmanned aircraft operation. The XBAT AVEN Mechanical Design Advanced Lead Engineer leads the design, procurement, and development of components for the F110 engine’s vectoring exhaust nozzle module as a hardware and/or sub-module owner. The role may report to an engineering manager in Lynn, Massachusetts, or Evendale, Ohio, and involves integration with internal and external engineering disciplines.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field from an accredited university.
  • At least 5 years of experience in mechanical design and analysis, with a focus on advanced systems in aerospace, power generation, or a closely related high-tech industry.
  • Must be able to prove U.S. Person status as a U.S. lawful permanent resident, U.S. citizen, or person granted asylee or refugee status because the role requires access to U.S. export-controlled information.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
  • Employment visa sponsorship is not available now or in the future.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s or Ph.D. degree.
  • Experience leading technical projects and/or mentoring junior engineers.
  • Expert-level proficiency with CAD software such as NX or CATIA and advanced simulation tools such as Ansys.
  • Deep understanding of mechanical engineering principles, including stress analysis, fatigue, fracture mechanics, vibrations, heat transfer, and fluid dynamics.
  • Experience with design for manufacturing (DFM), design for assembly (DFA), and additive manufacturing processes.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills for complex technical challenges.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills, including the ability to collaborate with diverse teams and stakeholders.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment with multiple competing priorities.
  • Experience with configuration management and product lifecycle management (PLM) systems.
  • Familiarity with industry standards and military regulations applicable to aerospace and/or power generation.

Responsibilities

  • Lead conceptualization, design, analysis, and validation of complex mechanical systems and components, including static structures, kinematic components, primary and secondary flaps, and ancillary hardware.
  • Apply advanced engineering principles, simulation tools such as FEA and CFD, and material science to optimize performance, weight, and cost while meeting aerospace and power-generation standards.
  • Work with product definition teams to develop and release component and assembly drawings for assigned exhaust nozzle system hardware, maintaining configuration control, producibility, and compliance with engine and air-vehicle integration requirements.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to mechanical, thermal, and systems engineers supporting exhaust nozzle system development.
  • Collaborate with systems, manufacturing, supply chain, test, and integration teams to support timely development, delivery, assembly, and integration of exhaust nozzle hardware and supporting equipment.
  • Develop and execute design verification and validation plans for exhaust nozzle system components and subsystems, including rig and engine test support, test fixture definition, instrumentation requirements, data analysis, and technical report generation.
  • Identify and mitigate technical risks across the product lifecycle using structured design and problem-solving methods.
  • Present exhaust nozzle designs, analyses, test results, and technical recommendations to internal stakeholders, customers, and certification or regulatory representatives as required.
  • Ensure designs meet company engineering standards, safety requirements, quality expectations, and applicable airworthiness or program-specific compliance requirements.
