The Writing Tutor works with undergraduate students enrolled in UNM courses through CTL Student Learning Assistance, a program that aims to enrich UNM’s academic climate and foster lifelong learning. Tutors support students at different stages of the writing process, including brainstorming, outlining, drafting, organizing, and revising. They provide feedback and guidance on writing, mechanics, grammar, and style, but do not edit or write for students. This application is for Spring 2027 hiring only, and the current search is specifically for a bilingual Spanish-English tutor. Tutors facilitate learning through individual consultations offered in person, online, and asynchronously by email. They listen to students’ ideas, read drafts, offer feedback, strategies, and resources, and discuss writing assignments. They may also provide guidance on American English, including grammar, pronunciation, vocabulary, academic style, and cultural norms, with sensitivity to the many ways English is used. Tutors may occasionally plan or facilitate writing workshops or events and serve as liaisons between departments and CTL writing services. Student staff participate in weekly or biweekly training and professional development focused on writing content and tutoring practices. They help create an inclusive learning environment and perform administrative responsibilities in accordance with CTL and UNM guidelines.
