The City of Mesa is seeking to fill vacancies for Water Meter Technician, which may be filled at either the Water Meter Technician I or Water Meter Technician II level. The Water Meter Technician I is a trainee position focused on learning specialized water meter maintenance, including calibrating, installing, maintaining, repairing, testing, and cleaning commercial and residential water meters and Advanced Meter Infrastructure (AMI) devices. This role also involves maintaining a water meter test bench, monitoring and adjusting chlorine levels, cleaning filters, performing minor repairs, and resetting or replacing water meter boxes. The Water Meter Technician II works in both field and shop environments, performing advanced tasks such as calibrating, installing, maintaining, repairing, testing, and cleaning water meters and AMI devices. This level also includes setting and removing construction fire hydrant meters, testing and repairing backflow preventers, managing service orders in a mobile dispatch/CIS system, fabricating parts, and performing meter exchanges. Technicians at this level may respond to emergency situations involving hydrant meters and assist in assessing damages to City property. Both levels require adherence to safety procedures and the use of appropriate safety equipment. The Water Meter Technician II is distinguished by responsibilities involving large commercial meters, construction fire hydrant meters, and backflow preventers, and requires independent judgment in technical and customer-related decisions.
