About The Position

The American Medical Association (AMA) is seeking a VP, Human Resources for its corporate offices in Chicago. This hybrid role requires 3 days a week in the office and reports into the Chicago, IL office. The VP will be a leader in the Human Resources team, responsible for providing all HR-related services to the AMA Senior Management Group (SMG) and AMA workforce. This role acts as a quasi ‘business partner’ to the SMG, anticipating management needs and providing solutions. Key responsibilities include overseeing organization-wide recruitment, performance management, employee relations, and EEO compliance. The VP will ensure the HR team meets the SMG’s needs as the AMA pursues new strategic goals and expands into new business lines, thereby strengthening and optimizing the performance and effectiveness of AMA staff. This role has primary accountability for the performance of an AMA sub-function or key area within a business unit, developing and executing sub-function and business unit strategy/vision, and influencing resource allocation across multiple sub-functions or business units.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree required
  • 15+ years of experience in Human Resources
  • Deep experience as a strategic HR Business Partner, including employee relations, staffing, and counseling
  • 10+ years experience in people management required
  • Excellent demonstrated working knowledge and application of employment law
  • Proven experience coaching and counseling senior executive level leaders
  • Demonstrated experience managing large projects such as reorganizations or downsizings
  • Experience selecting and managing retained and contingency search firms
  • Excellent demonstrated interpersonal and presentation skills, including proven ability to interact with all levels of staff and management
  • Demonstrated ability to facilitate a team environment and work as a strong individual contributor
  • Working knowledge of compensation philosophy and job grading
  • Working knowledge of talent acquisition strategies and processes
  • Demonstrated excellent judgment, decisiveness, and problem-solving skills
  • Exceptional interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
  • Able to bring credibility to the human resources function through professional qualifications and leadership and influence ability
  • Experience building respectful and productive collaboration at the most senior levels of a large-scale, complex organization

Responsibilities

  • Serve as HR’s liaison to the SMG, becoming familiar with business plans and strategies to provide all HR-related services as needed or anticipated.
  • Proactively provide guidance, advice, and act as a resource for organizational, employee, or other staffing issues.
  • Oversee a staff of Human Resources Generalists/Business Partners who will collaborate across HR functions (Compensation, Benefits/Wellness, and OD&L) and non-HR functions (Finance, OGC and external resources) to find positive solutions to HR issues for assigned clients.
  • Develop best practices and coach HR Generalists to instill and maintain a value-added business partner mindset in working with assigned client groups.
  • Lead the HR components of small and large reorganizational or other projects, overseeing the project team of HR specialists as necessary.
  • Provide direct support for client group(s), assign client groups to HR Generalists, and provide back-up.
  • Lead the AMA recruiting functions including assessment, team management, sourcing, and search firm selection for all positions at the Vice Presidential level and below.
  • Lead or co-lead recruiting for Group Vice Presidents and Vice Presidents.
  • Oversee the design and execution of the overall talent strategy to attract, hire, and retain high-caliber staff.
  • Enhance recruitment infrastructure, such as Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS), reducing dependency on external agencies, and optimizing sourcing spend.
  • Work with HR leadership and hiring managers to forecast needs and improve candidate experience.
  • Lead the AMA’s employee relations and employment compliance functions, providing expertise and making decisions in resolving complex issues.
  • Serve as the primary interface with the Office of General Counsel on employee-related issues.
  • Develop metrics to track the effectiveness of HR results individually and as a group, using them to implement process improvements, identify gaps, and determine solutions.
  • Oversee the maintenance of manual and electronic documents, files, and records for compliance with regulatory requirements and established guidelines.
  • Develop and maintain HR policies and processes to ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations and support organizational goals and objectives.
  • Ensure compliance with state, federal, and local regulations.
  • Lead, mentor, and provide management oversight for staff.
  • Be responsible for setting objectives, evaluating employee performance, and fostering a collaborative team environment.
  • Be responsible for developing staff knowledge and skills to support career development.
