VP/Director, Software Engineering – Payments

OneMain Financial•Charlotte, NC

About The Position

OneMain is seeking a senior technology leader to own the technical strategy and modernization of its Credit Card Payments domain. The leader will establish the architecture and engineering roadmap to improve payment resiliency on existing vendor infrastructure while progressively building a modern payment orchestration capability. The position calls for engineering leadership, payments expertise, sound architecture judgment, and the ability to work across Product, Business, Operations, Risk, and enterprise technology teams. The role owns technology strategy across customer intent, payment processing, payment reconciliation, and payment posting. It will guide near-term improvements while vendors continue to provide core processing, and establish an orchestration layer that progressively decouples customer experiences from vendor-specific implementations. The leader will oversee decisions across the complete payment lifecycle, establish APIs, events, states, and domain boundaries, and ensure security, risk, regulatory controls, and operational resilience. The leader will guide technical discovery and modernization planning, partner with Product and Business leaders on customer and operational outcomes, and develop the engineering organization and its leadership. Success means protecting customer payment experiences from vendor availability and failure scenarios, then establishing an architecture in which OneMain owns customer intent and payment state while vendors provide processing capabilities, with flexibility to support multiple processors or payment rails. OneMain Financial offers personal loans, credit cards, and other products, and describes its culture as inclusive, customer-first, collaborative, and supportive of career development and flexible work arrangements. The company provides benefits for full-time and some part-time team members.

  • Knowledge of technology and management principles involved in planning, organizational change management, resource allocation, leadership techniques, and coordination of people.
  • Proven ability to assess software engineering practices and implement improvements that increase engineering effectiveness, operational efficiency, time to value, reliability, and product quality.
  • Demonstrated ability to contribute to technology strategy and planning, translate broader vision into priorities, and drive execution across teams.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, including identifying root causes, evaluating alternatives, resolving cross-team conflicts, and creating solutions that can be replicated across teams.
  • Strong communication and influence skills, including explaining complex technology decisions, tradeoffs, risks, and strategy to senior technical and business stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to foster a culture of learning, engineering excellence, innovation, accountability, and continuous improvement.
  • Significant software engineering and technology leadership experience building highly available, distributed platforms.
  • Strong experience with payments, financial services, transaction processing, or similarly complex transactional systems.
  • Deep understanding of distributed-system concepts, including idempotency, asynchronous processing, event-driven architecture, consistency, retries, and failure recovery.
  • Experience integrating with payment processors, banking platforms, or other third-party transaction systems.
  • Strong API and domain architecture experience.
  • Ability to operate in ambiguity, identify the real problem, and establish a clear technical direction.
  • Ability to move between architecture, engineering execution, and business outcomes.
  • Strong executive communication and cross-functional influence.
  • Track record of developing strong engineers and technical leaders.

Nice To Haves

  • Deep experience in payments, financial services, transaction processing, or other complex, highly regulated transactional systems.
  • Experience with payment orchestration, payment processors, banking platforms, ACH or other payment rails, reconciliation, posting, settlement, returns, and exception management.
  • Experience designing and operating highly available distributed systems, including durable state management, idempotency, asynchronous processing, retries, recovery, event-driven architecture, APIs, observability, and cloud technologies.
  • Experience leading modernization or transformation initiatives from discovery and target-state architecture through executable roadmaps and production delivery.
  • Experience establishing domain boundaries, canonical APIs and events, and architectures that reduce dependency on vendor-specific implementations.
  • Track record of hiring, retaining, mentoring, and growing high-performing engineers and engineering leaders.
  • Demonstrated success partnering across Product, Business, Operations, Risk, Architecture, Security, and external vendors to deliver measurable customer and business outcomes.

Responsibilities

  • Define the short- and long-term Payments technology strategy and target architecture.
  • Lead near-term efforts to improve resiliency while existing vendors continue to provide core payment processing capabilities.
  • Establish a payment orchestration layer that progressively decouples customer experiences from vendor-specific implementations.
  • Own technology decisions across the complete payment lifecycle, from customer intent through processing, reconciliation, and posting.
  • Identify failure modes and design for retries, recovery, idempotency, observability, and operational resilience.
  • Establish canonical payment APIs, events, states, and domain boundaries.
  • Lead technical discovery and translate findings into an executable modernization roadmap.
  • Partner with Product and Business leaders to identify payment capabilities that improve customer experience and operational outcomes.
  • Develop the engineering organization and identify talent or capability gaps required to execute the strategy.
