About The Position

The full-time Volunteer Engagement Specialist works alongside individual and group volunteers and other Volunteer Department staff at the Regional Food Bank, where each year more than 20,000 people donate their time. This is a hands-on position that involves working with volunteers to sort and repack food and non-food products in the warehouse. Warehouse experience is helpful but not required. The successful candidate is someone who is dependable and has a strong work ethic, energetic, good with people, and a team player. They should be able to communicate various instructions coherently and provide an educational component to volunteers (training on topic provided). They will become savvy in the use of CERVIS, a volunteer scheduling software program (training provided), and be able to correspond with and schedule high volumes of volunteers on a daily basis. They must be able to work in a physically active, fast-paced environment, able to stand, walk, and lift up to 50 pounds on a regular basis, and able to work in a warehouse where temperatures fluctuate. They will be responsible for opening and closing the building and available weekdays, weeknights and one weekend day on a prearranged schedule. They must be able to receive a forklift operator's license with training provided by the Food Bank and provide their own steel-toe shoes (annual compensation is provided). They should be committed to the cause of hunger relief and serious about working hard for a good cause.

Requirements

Must be 18 years of age or older
Possess a high school or equivalency diploma
Intermediate skills in Word and Excel
Good organizational, communication and planning skills
Strong people skills including the ability to work with people of different backgrounds and levels of understanding
Availability to work days, evenings, and weekends
Must possess a valid New York State Driver's License
Ability to obtain and maintain power equipment and food safety certifications
Able to stand, walk, and lift up to 50 pounds on a regular basis
Able to work in a warehouse where temperatures fluctuate
Responsible for opening and closing the building
Able to receive a forklift operator's license with training provided by the Food Bank
Able to provide own steel-toe shoes (annual compensation is provided)
Committed to the cause of hunger relief

Nice To Haves

College degree and/or related experience in the field preferred
Prior experience operating power equipment in a warehouse setting preferred

Responsibilities

Supervises, schedules and works with volunteers to sort and re-pack food and non-food products in the warehouse.
Completes accurate paperwork for volunteer hours and products sorted.
Fields inquiries and maintains regular communication with volunteers via email and telephone in a timely manner.
Schedules volunteers using the CERVIS system.
Coordinates volunteers for off-site events and assists with other projects as needed.
Conducts outreach to community groups.
Assists with volunteer recognition events.
Contributes ideas and materials to the department and organization's newsletters as needed.
Works with volunteers and staff in other areas of the operation as needed.
Maintains a clean and safe workspace.
Inspects power equipment prior to use.
Follows all safety standards and procedures.
Works independently and collaboratively with other departments and employees in support of the mission of the Food Bank.
Adheres to the Food Bank's Employee Code of Conduct.
Performs other duties as assigned.
