About The Position

Gonzaga University’s School of Education seeks a short-term, non-tenure-track Visiting Research Scholar for an appointment from January 2, 2027, through August 15, 2027. The Scholar will support research and programming for the School’s Gates Foundation-funded work, including the “AI for Instruction Fellowship,” which provides outreach and professional development to K–12 educators on the intentional and ethical use of AI. The role also involves leading or contributing to a focal project aligned with the Scholar’s expertise in multilingual learner education, adolescent development and AI, or special education. Across the fellowship and focal project, the Scholar will help identify and synthesize research, support data collection and analysis, and design, facilitate, and evaluate professional learning for preservice and practicing teachers and school leaders. The focal project may produce a paper, framework, prototype, curriculum, website, or app; an original research project may also be possible. The Scholar will collaborate with faculty and share work through seminars, workshops, presentations, and written products for educators, families, and scholarly audiences. The position is grounded in Gonzaga’s Jesuit, Catholic, and humanistic mission. AI is treated as support for professional judgment and human collaboration, not as an automated substitute, with attention to accuracy, bias, privacy, and legal compliance. The position is on campus in Spokane, Washington, with in-office presence five days per week. Applicants may be advanced doctoral candidates nearing completion, recent Ph.D. graduates, or established scholars whose work aligns with the School of Education’s mission and priorities.

  • Ability to work on-site in a typical office setting and participate in in-person meetings five days per week.

Nice To Haves

  • Ability to collaborate with faculty, staff, students, and partners across disciplines and sectors.

  • Build a knowledge base of relevant research and an asset-oriented vision to guide AI applications in the selected area.
  • Develop a deliverable product, such as a paper, framework, prototype, curriculum, website, or app, to disseminate recommendations; an original research project may also be possible.
  • Collaborate with faculty and contribute to the intellectual life of the School of Education.
  • Share developments through seminars, workshops, presentations, and written products for educators, families, and scholarly audiences.
