CW Visiting Scholar (Observership)

University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS)•Little Rock, AR

About The Position

The academic observership provides an internationally trained dermatologist with structured exposure to dermatologic practice in a U.S. academic medical center, specifically the Department of Dermatology at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. It supports the visiting scholar’s professional development through observation of clinical care, academic teaching, and interdisciplinary collaboration while maintaining institutional, regulatory, and patient-safety standards. The observership supports UAMS’s academic mission by fostering international professional exchange, promoting global perspectives in dermatology, and strengthening pathways for future education, research collaboration, and workforce development. It helps the scholar contextualize prior training within the U.S. healthcare environment. This role is educational and observational only; it is not clinical employment or supervised practice, involves no hands-on patient care, and grants no clinical privileges. The scholar may observe outpatient dermatology clinics and inpatient consultations as permitted; attend educational conferences, grand rounds, journal clubs, and teaching sessions when available; observe procedures and diagnostic processes without participating; engage in informal academic discussions with faculty and trainees; review de-identified educational materials in accordance with institutional policies; and participate in research projects as available. The scholar may not provide patient care, perform or assist with procedures or examinations, formulate diagnoses or treatment plans, enter electronic medical record documentation, order tests, prescribe medication, communicate clinical decisions to patients, or represent themselves as a licensed physician in the U.S. healthcare system. The visiting scholar must comply with UAMS policies, including HIPAA, patient privacy, and confidentiality requirements; maintain the non-clinical observational scope of the role; complete required onboarding, training, and compliance documentation before starting; and conduct themselves professionally in keeping with academic medical center standards.
