About The Position

The Department of Dance in the Peck School of the Arts is hiring an innovative dance artist, scholar, and educator with embodied expertise in either Contemporary Ballet and/or Hip Hop/Urban dance forms to teach across our curricula. The visiting faculty will teach undergraduate courses in Contemporary Ballet and/or Hip Hop/Urban dance practices as well as undergraduate and graduate courses in dance theory, dance history, and/or dance studies. They may teach other related courses through the lens of their expertise including composition, improvisation, student repertory creation, and/or somatic courses. The candidate should demonstrate a commitment to equity and inclusion in their teaching, and an ability to make cross-disciplinary connections in their course content. Responsibilities of visiting dance faculty include teaching undergraduate and graduate courses, choreographing for faculty/guest concerts, and contributing to department, college, and university service that includes recruitment, outreach, mentorship, and faculty governance. In addition, visiting faculty will maintain academic and/or creative research and professional engagement with local, state, and national associations. The Department of Dance invites applications for an Assistant Visiting Professor position in Dance to begin Fall 2026. This position is a one-year appointment with the potential for further renewal. Employment Agreement: Beginning and Ending Dates of Appointment: August 24, 2026 through May 23, 2027. This fixed-term academic staff appointment is only for the period of time specified in this letter, however, the appointment may be renewed for up to additional two academic years. Per Admin. Code sec. UWS 10.05(1)(a) and Chapter 108 of UWM’s Academic Staff Personnel Policies and Procedures (ASPPP), no further notice of nonrenewal will be given except as required under Chapter 108 of the ASPPP.) GENERAL UWM INFORMATION: UWM is one of two doctoral-granting institutions in the University of Wisconsin System and offers 184 degree programs including 96 undergraduate degrees, 55 master’s degrees, 1 specialist program and 32 doctoral programs, through 14 schools and colleges. The 93-acre main campus, just blocks from Lake Michigan, is located in a residential neighborhood on Milwaukee’s east side, offering faculty, staff, and students a wide range of cultural, athletic, and entertainment opportunities. The Peck School is Wisconsin’s leading comprehensive arts education institution. The school's alumni in the fields of art and design, dance, film, music, and theatre have played influential roles in arts organizations, schools, and businesses, particularly in Milwaukee and Wisconsin but also across the country and throughout the world for nearly 50 years. The school also offers more than 350 dance, music, and theatre performances, film screenings, and art exhibitions each year and has extensive partnerships throughout its community and region. This year, about 1870 students—undergraduate, graduate, and certificate—studied and worked with 70 faculty and 170 instructional staff members in the Peck School. PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Our faculty engage in dance practice, scholarship, and mentorship that is committed to interdisciplinary research, community engagement, and social justice. Our innovative curriculum integrates multiple dance disciplines and somatic practices, creating a learning environment that prioritizes a balance of body and mind knowledge with informed, creative practice and expression. The faculty strive to locate our research and curricular material in socio-cultural and historical contexts. The Department of Dance produces four dance concerts per year, and mentors approximately 55 undergraduate dance majors, 12 graduate students, and 41 dance minors. Requirements

  • Candidates must have a terminal degree (MFA or PhD in Dance or relevant field) by the start of the appointment
  • At least 1-year (2 semesters of course delivery) of teaching in higher education
  • Ample experience and evidence of teaching Contemporary Ballet and/or Hip Hop/Urban dance forms
  • Knowledge and expertise to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in dance theory, dance history, and/or dance studies through a 21st-century lens.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience teaching Contemporary Ballet and/or Hip Hop/Urban dance forms in higher education for at least one year
  • A professional portfolio that demonstrates recent and ongoing innovations in choreographic, scholarly, and/or creative research in area(s) of expertise.
  • Experience teaching and/or applying somatic movement practices.
