About The Position

The Pet Hospital of La Mesa is a long-standing community animal hospital in La Mesa, California, focused on compassionate, high-quality veterinary care and excellent client service. It provides an upbeat, energetic, and professional work environment, treating patients and clients like family and offering owners honest, sound choices for their pets. The Veterinary Assistant will work in a fast-paced veterinary hospital and support veterinarians with patient care and clinical procedures. The role is part-time, 6–12 hours per week, with Saturdays required. The hourly pay range is $16.00–$19.00, depending on experience, education, certifications, licensure, and location.

Requirements

At least 3 years of veterinary clinical experience as a veterinary technician or assistant.
Knowledge of veterinary industry tools and equipment.
Experience with proper handling and restraint of cats and dogs.
Ability to perform nursing care in a veterinary hospital setting.
Solid understanding of animal behavior and healthcare.
Excellent communication and organizational skills.
Experience collecting laboratory samples, administering medications and vaccines, providing perioperative care, assisting with clinical procedures, and positioning patients for digital radiology.

Responsibilities

Collect laboratory samples for urinalysis, cytology, bloodwork, and fecal analysis.
Administer medications, vaccines, and treatments according to doctor orders.
Monitor anesthesia and provide pre-operative and post-operative surgical care.
Assist veterinarians with exams, treatments, and surgical procedures.
Position patients for diagnostic imaging, including digital radiology.
Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment.
Handle and restrain cats and dogs appropriately and provide nursing care in a veterinary hospital setting.
