Part-time Veterinary Assistant
About The Position
The Pet Hospital of La Mesa is a community-focused animal hospital in La Mesa, California, that provides compassionate, high-quality veterinary medicine and personalized client service in a friendly, upbeat work environment. The Veterinary Assistant supports veterinarians and patients in a fast-paced hospital setting, helping provide excellent medical care and a positive experience for clients. This is a part-time role scheduled for 6–12 hours per week, with Saturdays required. The hourly pay range is $16.00–$19.00, depending on experience, education, certifications, licensure, and location.
Requirements
- At least 3 years of veterinary clinical experience as a veterinary technician or assistant.
- Knowledge of veterinary industry tools and equipment.
- Experience with proper handling and restraint of cats and dogs.
- Ability to perform nursing care in a veterinary hospital setting.
- Solid understanding of animal behavior and healthcare.
- Strong communication and organizational skills.
- Ability to collect laboratory samples and administer medications, vaccines, and treatments as directed.
- Experience with anesthesia monitoring, surgical care, assisting with exams and procedures, and diagnostic work including digital radiology positioning.
Responsibilities
- Collect laboratory samples for urinalysis, cytology, bloodwork, and fecal analysis.
- Administer medications, vaccines, and treatments according to doctor orders.
- Monitor anesthesia and provide pre-operative and post-operative surgical care.
- Assist veterinarians with examinations, treatments, and surgical procedures.
- Support diagnostic procedures, including positioning for digital radiology.
- Handle and restrain cats and dogs appropriately.
- Provide nursing care in a veterinary hospital setting.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment.
- Communicate effectively and stay organized while supporting patient care and client service.
