Utility Locator (Elmwood Park, IL)
About The Position
Northern Lights Locating & Inspection, Inc. is seeking an experienced Utility Locator to locate underground utilities and help protect underground infrastructure. The company has operated since 2001 and performs utility locating, inspection, and sewer imaging projects nationwide. The position is full-time and involves independent work in an assigned territory, with operational support and modern locating technology. Locators must work in all weather conditions, maintain company equipment and vehicles, communicate effectively with excavators, property owners, and teammates, and participate in an on-call rotation. Overtime, flexible schedules, and travel may be required. Compensation is $20.00–$30.00 per hour, and the company states that employees are paid door to door.
Requirements
- At least 2 years of utility locating experience is preferred.
- Strong knowledge of 811 laws and best locate practices.
- Valid driver's license.
- Ability to pass a drug screen.
- Willingness to work overtime and flexible schedules.
- Maintain a tobacco-free company vehicle.
- Consistent attendance and punctuality.
- Ability to work independently and without supervision.
- Willingness to travel.

Responsibilities
- Locate underground utilities in compliance with applicable 811 dig laws.
- Read and interpret utility maps, as-built drawings, and GIS data.
- Use electronic locating equipment and multiple locating methods.
- Mark utilities accurately using paint and flags.
- Document work in a mobile app, including photos and reports.
- Investigate and document excavation-related utility damages.
- Participate in an on-call rotation.
- Maintain company equipment and vehicles.
- Communicate effectively with excavators, property owners, and team members.
- Work in all weather conditions and independently in an assigned work area.
