About The Position
Northern Lights Locating & Inspection, Inc. is hiring an experienced Utility Locator to locate underground utilities and help protect utility infrastructure. The company has worked in utility locating, inspection, and sewer imaging since 2001 and operates nationwide on critical projects. This is a full-time employee position based in Franklin Park, Illinois, with work in an assigned territory and participation in an on-call rotation. The role offers independence in the assigned work area, operational support, and modern locating technology. The Utility Locator must work independently, follow 811 dig laws and best practices, and communicate effectively with excavators, property owners, and team members. The role requires work in all weather conditions, maintaining company equipment and vehicles, and willingness to travel, work overtime, and follow flexible schedules.
Requirements
- At least 2 years of utility locating experience preferred.
- Strong knowledge of 811 laws and best locating practices.
- Valid driver's license.
- Ability to pass a drug screen.
- Willingness to work overtime and flexible schedules.
- Willingness to work in all weather conditions and travel.
- Consistent attendance and punctuality.
- Ability to work independently and without supervision.
- Accuracy, safety awareness, and effective communication.

Responsibilities
- Locate underground utilities in compliance with applicable 811 dig laws.
- Read and interpret utility maps, as-built drawings, and GIS data.
- Use electronic locating equipment and multiple locating methods.
- Mark utilities accurately using paint and flags.
- Document work in a mobile app, including photos and reports.
- Investigate and document excavation-related utility damages.
- Participate in an on-call rotation.
- Maintain company equipment and vehicles.
- Communicate effectively with excavators, property owners, and team members.
- Maintain a tobacco-free company vehicle.
