Utility Locator (Rising Sun, IN)
About The Position
Northern Lights Locating & Inspection, Inc. is hiring an experienced Utility Locator to locate underground utilities and protect underground utility infrastructure. The company has operated since 2001 and performs nationwide utility locating, inspection, and sewer imaging projects. The role offers independence in an assigned work area, without micromanagement, and includes operational support and modern locating technology. The position is full-time. The stated pay range is $20.00–$30.00 per hour, and employees are paid door to door. The work includes an on-call rotation, overtime, flexible schedules, travel, and working in all weather conditions. The locator must maintain company equipment and vehicles and communicate effectively with excavators, property owners, and team members.
Requirements
- At least 2 years of utility locating experience is preferred.
- Strong knowledge of 811 laws and best locating practices.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Ability to pass a drug screen.
- Willingness to work overtime and flexible schedules.
- Willingness to work in all weather conditions and travel.
- Maintain a tobacco-free company vehicle.
- Consistent attendance and punctuality.
- Ability to work independently and without supervision.

Responsibilities
- Locate underground utilities in compliance with 811 dig laws.
- Read and interpret utility maps, as-built drawings, and GIS data.
- Use electronic locating equipment and multiple locating methods.
- Mark utilities accurately using paint and flags.
- Document work in a mobile app, including photos and reports.
- Investigate and document excavation-related utility damages.
- Participate in an on-call rotation.
- Maintain company equipment and vehicles.
- Communicate with excavators, property owners, and team members.
