Utility Locator (Rising Sun, IN)
About The Position
Northern Lights Locating & Inspection, Inc. is hiring an experienced Utility Locator to locate underground utilities and help protect utility infrastructure. The company has provided utility locating, inspection, and sewer imaging services since 2001 and works nationwide on critical projects. This is a full-time employee position serving the Rising Sun, Indiana area, with a stated hourly pay range of $20.00–$30.00. Locators are paid door to door and participate in an on-call rotation. The role offers independence in an assigned work area, with operational support and modern locating technology. The successful candidate is self-motivated and able to work independently, accurately, and safely. The position requires working in all weather conditions, maintaining company equipment and vehicles, communicating effectively with excavators, property owners, and team members, and being willing to travel, work overtime, and accommodate flexible schedules.
Requirements
- At least 2 years of utility locating experience is preferred.
- Strong knowledge of 811 laws and best locating practices.
- Valid driver's license.
- Ability to pass a drug screen.
- Willingness to work in all weather conditions, overtime, and flexible schedules.
- Consistent attendance and punctuality.
- Ability to work independently and without supervision.
- Value accuracy and safety; communicate effectively and work well with a team.
Nice To Haves
- Experience working on nationwide utility locating, inspection, or sewer imaging projects.
Responsibilities
- Locate underground utilities in compliance with applicable 811 dig laws.
- Read and interpret utility maps, as-built drawings, and GIS data.
- Use electronic locating equipment and multiple locating methods.
- Mark utilities accurately using paint and flags.
- Document work in a mobile app, including photos and reports.
- Investigate and document excavation-related utility damages.
- Participate in an on-call rotation.
- Maintain company equipment and vehicles.
- Communicate with excavators, property owners, and team members.
- Maintain a tobacco-free company vehicle.
