About The Position

Northern Lights Locating & Inspection, Inc. is hiring an experienced Utility Locator in Madison, Indiana. The company has protected underground utility infrastructure since 2001 and works nationwide on utility locating, inspection, and sewer imaging projects. This professional role involves independently managing an assigned work area while maintaining accurate, safe, and reliable locating work. The position requires working in all weather conditions, maintaining company equipment and vehicles, communicating effectively with excavators, property owners, and team members, and participating in an on-call rotation.

Requirements

• At least 2 years of utility locating experience is preferred.
• Strong knowledge of 811 laws and best locating practices.
• Valid driver’s license.
• Ability to pass a drug screen.
• Willingness to work overtime and flexible schedules.
• Willingness to work in all weather conditions.
• Maintain a tobacco-free company vehicle.
• Consistent attendance and punctuality.
• Ability to work independently and without supervision.
• Accuracy, safety, and effective communication.

Responsibilities

• Locate underground utilities in compliance with applicable 811 dig laws.
• Read and interpret utility maps, as-built drawings, and GIS data.
• Use electronic locating equipment and multiple locating methods.
• Mark utilities accurately using paint and flags.
• Document work in a mobile app, including photos and reports.
• Investigate and document excavation-related utility damages.
• Participate in an on-call rotation.
• Maintain company equipment and vehicles.
• Communicate with excavators, property owners, and team members.
