About The Position

Dwight School, a Pre-K-12 coeducational school on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, is seeking an experienced, dynamic, and innovative Upper School Theater Teacher & Director for the 2026-2027 academic year. The ideal candidate would be an experienced teacher with a successful track record in teaching academic Theater courses and directing both plays and musicals. Teaching and some full productions take place in Dwight’s Black Box Theater which has a professional level ETC Ion lighting console, LED lighting system, and QLab driven sound system.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Theater or a related field required
  • At least three (3) years of experience teaching
  • Experience teaching to a wide range of learners
  • Experience teaching and developing curriculum for a wide range of Theater topics/areas of study: acting, directing, playwriting, scene design, theater technology, etc.
  • Eagerness to contribute positively to the Dwight School community
  • Willingness to engage with and learn from people with diverse backgrounds and experiences
  • Ability to bring joy, kindness, maturity, humor, hard work, and flexibility to the school environment

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in Theater or a related field preferred
  • Experience as a professional Theater artist preferred
  • Experience with production management, technical direction, and/or set design/carpentry preferred (please specify in cover letter if experience)
  • Experience with the IB Middle Years Program and Diploma Program highly preferred
  • Experience with thoughtful integration of technology and AI into curricula preferred
  • Eagerness to present a modern, diverse vision for Theater performances (through both pedagogical practices and repertoire options)

Responsibilities

  • Teach IB Middle Years Program and/or IB Diploma Programme Theater courses
  • Present curricular classwork to the Dwight School community at bi-annual Upper School Scene Nights
  • Direct two extra-curricular productions per year, one in the fall and one in the spring (play(s) and/or a musical)
  • Collaborate closely with other Dwight colleagues concerning the development of curriculum, academic scope and sequence, student wellness and growth, and professional development to yield a positive and healthy school environment
  • Develop and foster student’s skill progression throughout the program through differentiated instruction, based on the department’s internal scope and sequence
  • Form positive relationships with students in an effort to foster personal academic growth and artistic/performance skill development
  • Display a commitment to diversity and creating a culture of equity, inclusion, and belonging in approach to teaching and learning, as they are recognized and valued by Dwight
  • Complete an online Anti-Bias training program in the first year of teaching
