About The Position

This position assists the credit union in achieving its mission statement by approving, denying, or counter-offering borrower applications for credit or extensions of lines of credit, consumer credit loans, or credit card accounts according to existing loan policy. The Underwriter supports and models PFCU’s Service Standards and builds profitable loans from completed applications. They maintain a thorough knowledge of CU lending policy, interest rates, and all products and services offered by PFCU, identifying and documenting products and services members qualify for. The role provides service and support to the Originating Team, ensuring they understand the reasoning for denials and counter-offers and can explain decisions to members. Additional responsibilities include back-office tasks, processing on-line applications, sending Adverse Actions, and maintaining the cleanliness and security of the work area. The Underwriter is also expected to seek training opportunities and participate in educational functions as requested by management.

Requirements

  • High School Graduate or equivalent.
  • Two to Three years lending and underwriting experience is required.
  • Ability to creatively structure good performing loans within PFCU policies and procedures.
  • Excellent understanding of lending policies and procedures.
  • Able to make decisions and recommendations.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or government regulations.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, employees, clients, members, and the general public.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Must have the capability to deal with problems involving concrete variables in standardized and non-standardized situations.
  • Excellent knowledge of the credit union’s core system.
  • Excellent working knowledge of the forms and documentation used by the credit union.
  • Strong knowledge of credit union products and services.
  • Excellent understanding of the Credit Union departments and procedures.
  • Punctual, self-motivated, confident and accurate.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills both written and verbal.
  • Able to stay calm under pressure.

Responsibilities

  • Build a solid profitable loan from a completed loan application prepared by the Lending Originator.
  • Maintain thorough knowledge of CU lending policy and interest rates and be capable of discussing various loan alternatives with the Lending Originator.
  • Support cross sales of the Lending Originator by identifying and documenting products and services members qualify for on applications reviewed.
  • Maintain thorough knowledge of all products and services offered by PFCU.
  • Provide service and support to the Originating Team ensuring they understand reasoning for denials and counter-offers and are in a position to fully explain the decision to the member.
  • Accept, approve, deny or counter-offer on-line applications through DL4.
  • Send out Adverse Actions.
  • Maintain cleanliness and security of work area and equipment and protect the confidentiality of member information.
  • Seek training opportunities to develop or enhance through training, conferences, reading etc.
  • Willingly participate in and attend educational functions and meetings as requested by management.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.
