About The Position

This position is responsible for a wide range of progressively responsible maintenance tasks in the preventive maintenance, repair, and construction of State-maintained roads. The role involves setting up work zones, installing traffic control devices, repairing asphalt pavements, clearing right-of-way of debris and hazards, assisting with pipe installation, and operating various hand and power tools. The selected candidate will operate equipment such as an asphalt maintainer, asphalt patch truck, tandem dump truck, crack sealing machine, rollers, sweepers, skid steer, and backhoe. Responsibilities also include monitoring tasks performed by other transportation workers and responding to emergencies like snow and ice removal, downed trees, and traffic control cleanup during normal business hours or emergency callback situations and scheduled nightwork. A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with an “N” endorsement is required at the time of hire or must be obtained within 360 days. Pre-employment drug testing and signing of release and background forms are required. Safety toe footwear is necessary. The position requires work during adverse weather conditions, potentially leading to extended hours, weekends, and holidays, and involves exposure to extreme environmental conditions and hazards at highway construction sites.

Requirements

  • High school or General Educational Development diploma and three years of experience operating equipment directly related to the field of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License with an “N” endorsement on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License with an “N” endorsement must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire.
  • Ability to legally operate CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date.
  • Pre-employment drug testing is required.
  • Release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be signed.
  • Safety toe footwear is needed.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience performing drainage maintenance activities (such as shoulder and ditch maintenance, pipe installation, and drainage structures)
  • Experience in the operation of at least 2 pieces of the following equipment: backhoe, tandem dump truck, motor grader, front end loader, forklift, force feed loader, asphalt distributor, asphalt patcher crack sealing machine, track excavators, skid steer or sweeper
  • Working knowledge of Work Zone Safety and Workplace safety policies
