About The Position

This position will function as a Transportation Worker II in the Wake County Maintenance Unit located in Raleigh, NC. The role involves a wide range of progressively responsible maintenance tasks in preventive maintenance, repair, and construction of state-maintained roads and roadside features. The employee will operate various pieces of heavy equipment and perform manual labor, including flagging operations. Emergency response is a key aspect, requiring work during adverse weather and other emergencies, which may lead to extended hours, weekends, and holidays. The position is subject to emergency call back and involves working in outside extreme environmental conditions and hazardous highway construction sites.

Requirements

  • Working knowledge of the principles involved in the operation and use of the equipment to which assigned
  • Ability to perform assigned tasks and to follow oral and written instructions as directed by supervisor
  • Ability to operate the minimum amount of equipment required in the preceding level
  • Ability to lift up to 50lbs repeatedly
  • Ability to climb, bend, transverse steep and uneven terrain, and work in extreme temperature conditions
  • Ability to legally operate CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date
  • Possession of a current Class A Commercial Driver’s License with N endorsement on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire
  • Pre-employment drug testing required
  • Completion and signing of a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing
  • Successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation
  • High school or General Educational Development diploma and three years of experience operating equipment directly related to the field of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire
  • Safety toe shoes required

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of Basic Work Safety and Traffic Control
  • Experience in one of the following: shoulder and ditch maintenance, pipe installation, or asphalt patching
  • Experience in the operation of at least 2 pieces of the following equipment: asphalt distributor, asphalt mixer, asphalt patcher, crack sealing machine, ditching machine, forklift, force feed loader, front end loader, skid steer, street sweeper, tandem dump truck, or tractor “A” boom

Responsibilities

  • Function as a Transportation Worker II in the Wake County Maintenance Unit
  • Perform a wide range of progressively responsible maintenance tasks in preventive maintenance, repair and construction of state-maintained roads and roadside features
  • Install traffic & erosion control devices
  • Clear right of way
  • Perform roadway grading
  • Machine unpaved roads
  • Perform pavement repair
  • Install pipes or other drainage tasks
  • Inspect contract work
  • Monitor manual tasks performed
  • Respond to emergencies including traffic accident clean-up, snow and ice removal, hurricane cleanup and other emergencies
  • Operate various pieces of equipment including bulldozer, excavator, backhoe, skid steer, tandem dump truck, forklift, front end loader, tractor trailer, motor grader, roller, and additional pieces of heavy equipment as needed
  • Perform flagging operations to safely guide traffic through work zones
  • Perform manual labor for extended periods of time (operating chain saws, shoveling, driving trucks and litter pickup)
  • Work during any adverse weather such as snow and/or ice, tornadoes, hurricanes, etc., and emergency response
  • Be subject to emergency call back
  • Perform variety of other assigned duties
  • Train on and operate equipment associated with the specialist level for a small percentage of time
