About The Position

This Transportation Worker II position is located in the Division 9 Roadside Environmental office in Forsyth County. The role involves performing a wide range of progressively responsible tasks in vegetation management, including erosion control and plant bed maintenance. This includes installing erosion control, mowing, and maintaining plant material along NCDOT rights-of–way. The position requires skilled operation, inspection, and maintenance of various equipment such as trucks, tractors, specialized mowers, mulch blowers, hydro seeders, and both hand and power tools. Responsibilities also include routinely setting up traffic control for work zones and ensuring the proper application rates of landscape materials like seed, fertilizer, limestone, and pesticides. The worker may be required to respond to emergencies during normal business hours, emergency callback situations, and scheduled night work.

Requirements

  • Safety-toed shoes required.
  • Legally operate a motor vehicle.
  • Possession of a current North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License with Tanker (N) endorsement on the date of hire, OR obtain it through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire.
  • Pre-employment drug testing will be required.
  • Completion and signing of a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substance and alcohol testing.
  • Successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.
  • High school or General Educational Development diploma and three years of experience operating equipment directly related to the field of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of vegetation management including, but not limited to, shrubs, trees, fertilizer, etc. using sound horticultural practices.
  • Experience in applying herbicides to control weeds and brush.
  • Experience operating equipment designed for all aspects of landscape operations.
  • Experience in at least one piece of Category B equipment (asphalt distributor, front end loader, dump truck, tractor “A” boom mower, mulch blower, sod seeder, tractor with sprayer attachments, brush chipper, conventional pesticide applicator, hydroseeder, skid steer).
  • Experience in correctly applying herbicides and pesticides in accordance with the label, as well as proper storage and disposal techniques.
