About The Position

This position involves a wide range of progressively responsible maintenance tasks for the preventive maintenance, repair, and construction of State maintained roads. Key duties include setting up work zones, installing traffic control devices, repairing asphalt pavements, clearing rights of way of debris and hazards, and assisting with pipe installation. The role requires operating various hand and power tools, as well as heavy equipment such as an asphalt maintainer, asphalt patch truck, tandem dump truck, crack sealing machine, rollers, sweepers, skid steer, and backhoe. The selected candidate will also monitor tasks performed by other transportation workers and respond to emergencies like snow and ice removal, downed trees, and traffic control cleanup, both during normal business hours and in emergency callback situations or scheduled nightwork. Pre-employment drug testing and specific CDL requirements are mandatory for this role.

Requirements

  • Ability to legally operate CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date
  • Possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License with an “N” endorsement on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License with an “N” endorsement must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire
  • Pre-employment drug testing is required for this position
  • As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing
  • Safety toe footwear is needed
  • High school or General Educational Development diploma and three years of experience operating equipment directly related to the field of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience

Nice To Haves

  • Experience performing drainage maintenance activities (such as shoulder and ditch maintenance, pipe installation, and drainage structures)
  • Experience in the operation of at least 2 pieces of the following equipment: backhoe, tandem dump truck, motor grader, front end loader, forklift, force feed loader, asphalt distributor, asphalt patcher crack sealing machine, track excavators, skid steer or sweeper
  • Working knowledge of Work Zone Safety and Workplace safety policies
