About The Position

This position is located in the Harnett County Maintenance Unit. Work will consist of a wide range of progressively responsible tasks in the preventive maintenance, repair, and construction of state-maintained roads. Routinely operates at least two pieces of Category B equipment in performing semi-skilled and skilled maintenance tasks, such as hauling asphalt, aggregate or soil materials; snow and ice operations; compacting asphalt, compacting embankments, sweeping roads; loading ditching material; and disposing of roadside debris. Employee hired in this position is expected to have a working knowledge of the principals involved in the operation and use of the equipment to which assigned. Manual labor includes, but is not limited to operating chain saws, shoveling, driving trucks, and litter pickup. Additional work includes installing traffic and erosion control devices, drainage/ditch maintenance, pipe and drainage structure installation, and flagging operations. Employee in this position is expected to perform assigned tasks and follow oral and written instructions as directed by supervisor.

Requirements

  • High school or General Educational Development diploma and three years of experience operating equipment directly related to the field of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire.
  • Ability to climb, bend, traverse steep and uneven terrain, and exposure to extreme temperature conditions.
  • Ability to lift up to 50lbs repeatedly and exert up to 100lbs of force occasionally.
  • Subject to emergency callback and may require work during non-traditional work hours including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Legally operate CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date.
  • Sign Release forms ALCDRG-01 and ALCDRG-06 allowing NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol.
  • Safety toe footwear required.
  • Successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.

Nice To Haves

  • Working knowledge of standard road maintenance and construction procedures.
  • Experience in one of the following: pipe installation, installation of erosion control devices, snow and ice removal, ditch maintenance or asphalt patching.
  • Experience in at least two pieces of Category B Maintenance equipment (asphalt distributor, asphalt mixer, asphalt patcher, crack sealing machine, ditching machine, force feed loader, front end loader, lube truck, asphalt maintainer, post driver, skid steer, street sweeper, tandem dump truck, tractor “A” boom mower, truck w/aerial device).
  • Working knowledge of Work Zone Safety and Workplace safety policies.
